Tectona grandis, commonly called teak, is a tropical hardwood tree in the mint family of Lamiaceae that is native to southern Asia that can grow up to 130 feet tall. Teak wood is valued for its durability, aesthetic appearance, termite and other pest resistance, and water resistance. It is used for boat construction, furniture, carving, veneers, as well as a variety of other applications. Because Tectona grandis wood contains silica and is exceptionally hard, it can cause severe blunting to tools when working with teak. USDA hardiness zone 10b

Tectona grandis require cycles of wet and dry inorder to germinate reliably. Soak the seeds in room temperature water for 12 hours, then place the seeds on a plate in a bright area and allow to dry for 12 hours. Repeat this process, cycling the seeds between wet and dry, for 14 days. After the wet and dry cycles are complete, plant the seeds on the surface of a well draining potting soil and sprinkle enough soil over the surface to cover the seeds and gently pat down. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet and keep between 70°F and 80°F for best results. Germination typically takes 10 to 45 days to occur after planting.
