Helensburgh ‘best place in Scotland to raise a family’

Helensburgh is the only place in Scotland to be named in the best 25 places to raise a family by the Daily Telegraph.

The list is topped by St Albans in Hertfordshire, followed by Windsor in Berkshire and Egham in Surrey.

Helensburgh is placed 24th, but said be relatively affordable, with an average house price of £232,236 and detached houses averaging £416,390 – less than half the averages of £726,368 and £1,193,868 in St Albans.

The Telegraph says Helensburgh is ‘well connected’, with trans from the central and upper stations running to Glasgow, as well as being a stop for the Caledonian Sleeper.

The report adds: “Helensburgh, the gateway to the Highlands, has been popular for well over a century since wealthy Glasgow merchants first began to build houses here.

“There is a selection of local primary schools, a local secondary school and the private Lomond School.”

Caroleanne Gallagher of Savills estate agency is quoted as saying: “Some of Britain’s most spectacular scenery is around the Loch Lomond area,” and Cameron House Hotel, the Carrick Golf Club and Loch Lomond Golf Club are all listed.

The report adds: “The Glencoe and Nevis Range ski areas are both within an hour and a half’s drive and the Firth of Clyde provides some of Scotland’s most testing sailing waters.

“The neighbouring village of Rhu offers a modern marina and is home to the world famous Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club.”
