Hawkeye returns to the 4077th after R&R. Frank is trying to get used to be being in charge and Hawkeye learns that Trapper has gone home. Radar must go pick up Trapper’s replacement and Hawkeye goes along hoping to meet Trapper before he leaves Gimpo Airbase. After arriving at Gimpo, Hawkeye learns that he has missed Trapper by only 10 minutes. Hawkeye and Trapper meet Captain BJ Honeycutt. The new surgeon. Radar, Hawkeye, and B.J. begin to head toward the 4077th in a stolen jeep. Along the way BJ gets a taste of what Korea is like when they get caught in the middle of an artillery barrage and a young Korean girl steps on a landmine. After a flat tire, they finally arrive back to the 4077th to report for duty.

The camp learns Frank will be replaced as commanding officer of the 4077th. Hawkeye and BJ have to scrap their bar idea. The new C.O. is an army regular who has not been in an OR for two years. When Col. Sherman Potter arrives at the camp, he seems to be a by the book commander, making Klinger get rid of his dresses. After a session in OR, Potters asks Hawkeye and BJ if there are any good places to get a drink.

On a very cold night the camp is bustling with action. Radar is getting the camp ready for blackout conditions, Hawkeye and Margaret are on Post-Op duty with a patient giving them problems, Klinger is training a new guardsman who winds up shooting him, Frank searches Margaret’s tent for the notes he has written her, and Col. Potter tires to get the shelling stopped.

The Army made a clerical error and listed Hawkeye as being dead. Hawkeye is not able to get through to his father to let him know he is alive and well. The morgue bus arrives to pick up Hawkeye’s body and Hawkeye and Col. Potter try to correct the error. BJ decides he should throw Hawkeye and wake in the Swamp and Hawkeye is cut from the pay roll. After nothing seems to work, Hawkeye decides to allow the morgue to have him so he can go home.

Hawkeye and BJ try to get Frank to sign off in return for scrounge to get them a new microscope. Meanwhile, a sniper peppers away at the camp and Hawkeye and BJ treat a few officers off the record.

When Nurse Cratty’s orphanage is being attacked, the kids stay at the 4077th. BJ and Frank give the children physicals while a young girl thinks Klinger is a woman. BJ and Hawkeye tell two of the kids medal while Col. Potter reads to a few of them from a gun manual. A pregnant wounded Korean woman arrives, and the gang works to save her and the baby. As wounded come in, the children have to be moved out of the way of the working staff.

The Colonel has to ask a general for a favor to lay off Klinger while he is on R&R, but the general wants a date with Margaret in return. Just when the whole deal seems as though it may fall apart, it all works out in the end…or does it?

Frank tried to outlaw gambling while Potter was gone, and no one obeys. The charges against Hawkeye are ultimately dropped.
