Why Erik ten Hag wants Steve McClaren to join his coaching staff — explained

As per The Telegraph, Erik ten Hag was clear about having Steve McClaren on his coaching staff as opposed to Mike Phelan.

McClaren has worked as Sir Alex Ferguson's No.2 at Old Trafford during our glory days and that's exactly why the incoming Manchester United boss wants him.

The Telegraph understands that McClaren will have a less prominent role compared to Ten Hag's No.2 Mitchell van der Gaag.

However, Ten Hag values McClaren's 'knowledge of English football, the contacts with managers, directors and players'.

The Dutchman reportedly wanted a staff member who understands the United culture and McClaren fits that role perfectly.

Interestingly, Ten Hag worked under the 61-year-old during their time together at FC Twente.
