Decorative four winged fruits hang in equally dense clusters. Hailing from the Appalachian Mountains this understory tree-shrub does best in coolish sites. General rule, the more prolonged summer heat above 36C, the more shade it requires. Does well in full sun in our coastal garden. Grows to 10 m in height with a 5 meter spread. Soft yellow fall colour. Simple leaf with a gentle serrated edge. Disease and pest resistant. Flowers at a very young age (4 years).

How to germinate Halesia tetraptera seeds:

Seed requires 60-120 days warm stratification (20-25C) followed by 60-90 days cold stratification (2-4C). Prepare seed by soaking and removing the soft pericarp.  Be aware that more than one embryo can reside in the seed, prick out the emerged seedling and transplant. Replace the seed back in the warm stratification bag for continued germination.

Here is an article that deals with different stratification treatments including sulfuric acid. https://www.fs.fed.us/pnw/olympia/silv/publications/opt/634c_Johnson1995.pdf
