Sculpture – One Minute Sculptures

To begin this new brief we were told to mimic Erwin Wurm’s one minute sculptures. These sculptures challenge the perception of what a sculpture is and can be. He does this by having the viewer creating the sculpture and staying there for one minute, hence the name one minute sculpture.

For my own sculptures I had a bunch of ideas right away. I really enjoyed the process of finding objects I could use for this. For a few I had some fun by adding in a narrative. For example, in the skiing one all the props I have at a quick glance seem to fit the situation. But when you look closer you can see that I’m holding two hockey stick not ski poles, I have a mixing bole on my head and the ski’s I’m holding haven’t been used in over seventy years. These aspects make the viewer take an active part in the work as they end up focusing in on every part of the sculpture.

For this final sculpture I had the idea of using my cat. His name is king and he is a very docile cat. He was a little uncomfortable during the photos but was otherwise fine. He didn’t scratch me or even meow while we where taking photos. I gave him lots of treats after we had finished.

These last two photos where me trying to play around with colour and angles. I like the one on the left. But I realised that as I’m not holding the glasses its just a photo of me holding my cat. Therefore the photo on the right is the revised version where I’m holding the glasses.

  1. Those photos with your cat are so funky! The first and the third one are really cool they remind me of those like cheesy 80s style portraits. I also really like the one where your head is covered by a beanie and you’re holding up paper? I think it does a good job of that sort of uncanny valley feeling. It looks very sculptural.
