Charmouth

Charmouth is a traditional seaside village located on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, just a couple of miles east from Lyme Regis. It is relatively small in size, however there is an excellent selection of quaint shops to peruse. You will find everything you need for your stay in Dorset including a pharmacy, post office, bakers and butchers.

Charmouth Beach

Charmouth beach is popular amongst families thanks to its wide expanse of sand. It is split into two separate sections by the River Char, which sometimes forms a lagoon, where you can watch birds splash and swim! In the summer months the water is busy with people paddling in the shallows and at low water a number of rock pools are revealed.

The beach is largely unspoilt, which makes it an excellent destination for fossil hunting. Visitors are encouraged to learn more about the Jurassic Coast and the creatures that once inhabited its shoreline at the Charmouth Coast Heritage Centre, which is just a couple of minutes walk away. Here you will be able participated in guided fossil walks, and learn more about fossils through interactive displays.

Next to the Heritage Centre there is a cafe where you can order a selection of light lunches and snacks. There are also beach huts, which can be hired throughout the year, ideal for escaping the sun and relaxing in the shade. Pay and display car parks can be found next to the beach.

Dogs

Dogs are allowed on Charmouth beach, however there are a number of restrictions in place. From 1st May to 30th September dogs must be kept on a lead at the western end, however they can run freely during the autumn and winter months. At the eastern end dogs are not allowed on the beach at all between 10am and 6pm between 1st July and 30th August, although there are no restrictions outside of these times. Dogs are also not allowed on the central area of the beach from 1st May – 30th September.
