Sugarstick (Allotropa virgata)

Sugarstick (Allotropa virgata) is a strikingly beautiful mycoheterotroph found in shady forests scattered throughout western North America. Entirely red and white, this unique member of the Heath family lacks the green chlorophyll necessary for photosynthesis, and instead obtains nutrients via fungi. Alternate common names include barber's pole and candystriped Allotropa.
