Muhlenbergia paniculata is a curious grass of dry plains. The main axis of the panicle is reddish. The panicle has spikelike branches with closely appressed single floret spikelets that appear to be part of the branch. The glumes are unequal. Schedonnardus paniculatus is probably overlooked, because the panicles appear to be empty of florets.
