European mistletoe (Viscum album) is an evergreen, perennial, hemiparasitic shrub, which is able to infect more than 450 woody species. Besides mechanical pruning, a hyperparasitic fungus (Phaeobotryosphaeria visci) could be a successful candidate to develop an effective biocontrol agent against mistletoe. It was necessary to find antibiotics which make the isolation easier and do not effect mycelia growth negatively under strain. Furthermore, we wanted to define a medium for optimal growth under in vitro laboratory conditions. Three different media (potato-dextrose agar, modified oatmeal agar, ¼ PDA + V8 agar) and four antibiotics (kanamycin, ampicillin, rifampicin, nystatin) were tested. Oatmeal agar and potato-dextrose agar are optimal to maintain the fungal strains, the colony diameter was 9 cm on the 12th day. All tested antibiotics are useful, except nystatin.

Mistletoes are highly specialized perennial flowering plants adapted to parasitic life on aerial parts of their hosts. In our discussion on the physiological interactions between parasite and host, we focus on water relations, mineral nutrition, and the effect of host vigour. When host photosynthesis is greatest, the xylem water potential of the host is most negative. To maintain a flux gradient and avoid stomatal closure and wilting, the mistletoe must tolerate a more negative water potential than the host. Succulent leaves enhance water storage and allow mistletoes to rehydrate before their hosts rehydrate. Mistletoe infections may disrupt the host stomatal control system, causing early and oscillating closure of host stomata, thereby diminishing host photosynthetic gain. Mistletoes lack the active uptake of minerals of a typical plant root system and rely upon the haustorium to connect with the host for the essentially one-way flow of photosynthates and nutrients from host to par...

Evaluation of European mistletoe (Viscum album L.) infection in the Castle Park in Lednice2013 •
This experiment focused on the evaluation of mistletoe infection (Viscum albumL.) in main sections of the castle park in Lednice. The study evaluates the proportion of affected and unaffected individuals of host taxa and the intensity of their infestation. ForAcer campestreandTilia cordataone-way ANOVA was used to detect the difference among the number of mistletoe bushes and tree age, development stage, vitality and location. For the modelling of mistletoe infection probability also the dependence on these and other continuous explanatory variables (height and crown volume) was used for logistic regression with binomial distribution. Our results show that number of mistletoe on trees within same taxa increases with the tree age and with the lower tree vitality, but there is large difference between the hosts. Due to the results of logistic regression, the same factors also have strong impact on the probability of mistletoe infection, e.g. tree age and tree vitality. In this case no...

In the nurseries and natural regeneration of oak trees, on the background of intense accumulation on the level of the crowns of the seeding plants, strong attacks of phyto-pathogens are registered that cause the so called mildews and the most important of them is. The effects of mildews are manifested by diminutions of growing and biomass accumulations, with direct repercussions on the further quality of the attacked exemplars. As the age of the attacked exemplars is younger, as the intensity and degrees of attack are stronger. In this phase, the only measure of quick intervention, with direct effects is the chemo therapy. It is important to use only biodegradable substances, with no permanence on soil level. There are a lot of substances that may be used in fighting against mildew. This work proposes to verify the efficiency of some new fungicides (Allegro, Cabrio, Tilt, Duett ultra and Kumulus), compared with samples, untreated. The concentrations and doses for applying were diffe...

Use of an inundative biological control agent, Colletotrichum gloeosporioid.es, may provide an alternate method to control Arceuthobium tsugense (hemlock dwarf mistletoe) in the coastal forests of British Columbia, especially in variable retention areas, and in riparian and sensitive ecosystems. Variable retention practices can lead to in an increase in hemlock dwarf mistletoe infection, resulting in a loss of tree growth and vigor, reduction in wood quality, and tree death. Five Pacific Forestry Centre (PFC) C. gloeosporioides isolates were screened for conidia production, virulence, and lineal growth rate in culture. Results of this screening and a small field trial revealed that isolate PFC 2415 showed the most promising biological control agent characteristics. The highest number of C. gloeosporioides conidia was produced on the millet substrate compared to rice, slow oats and wheat bran. A field trial using PFC 2415 in three treatments applied in late August 2002 (a Stabileze p...
Mistletoes have been considered a keystone resource for biodiversity, as well as a remarkable source of medicinal attributes that attract pharmacologists. Due to their hemiparasitic nature, mistletoes leach water and nutrients, including primary and secondary metabolites, through the vascular systems of their plant hosts, primarily trees. As a result of intense mistletoe infection, the hosts suffer various growth and physiological detriments, which often lead to tree mortality. Because of their easy dispersal and widespread tropism, mistletoes have become serious pests for commercial fruit and timber plantations. A variety of physical and chemical treatment methods, along with silvicultural practices, have shaped conventional mistletoe management. Others, however, have either failed to circumvent the growing range and tropism of these parasitic plants or present significant environmental and public health risks. A biocontrol approach that could sidestep these issues has never achiev...
