Safra Campus, Jerusalem 91904, Israel (Received 29 May 2008; accepted in revised form 13 July 2008) AbsTrAcT A list of the type specimens of Anthemis (Compositae) housed in the type section of the Herbarium of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is presented for the irst time. The collection comprises 460 sheets of specimens representing 143 Anthemis taxa used by Eig (Eig, A. 1938. Taxonomic studies on the oriental species of the genus Anthemis. Palestine J. bot. Jerusalem Ser. 1(2): 161–224) and Z. yavin (in her 1970–1972 studies) for their revisions of the genus in the near East. The collection includes both type specimens designated by Eig and yavin, as well as 64 type fragments, duplicates, and other valuable specimens donated to Eig in 1935 by different herbaria. Keywords: Anthemis, Compositae, A. Eig, herbarium, collection, nomenclature INTrODUcTION during the reorganization and computerization of the type section of the herbarium of The hebrew university of Jerusalem, we assembled all type specimens of taxa belonging to the genus Anthemis that had been scattered throughout the herbarium. The bulk of the collection consists of ca. 130 taxa described and named by dr. Alexander Eig1 in his revision of the genus in the near East, published posthumously (1938). his work was devoted to 60 species (among them 40 new) and ca. 70 subspecies and varieties (among them 60 new) growing in the Eastern mediter1 dr. A. Eig (1894–1938) is one of the founders of botany and phytogeography research in israel. during 14 years of investigation of the East mediterranean and neighboring countries, Eig published more than 50 articles and revised several complex genera of the Compositae, Graminae, Scrophulariaceae, Geraniaceae, leguminosae, Cruciferae, and the whole of the Chenopodiaceae. For a biography and list of Eig’s publications, see Pal. J. bot. Jer. Ser. i (2): 114–124 (1938). ranean, iran, iraq, and india. later dr. Ziva yavin described eight new taxa (among them three new species) and designated lectotypes for some of Eig’s taxa (yavin, 1970, 1971, 1972). Twenty-one of the newly described species by Eig and three by yavin are still accepted according to the latest revisions of Ghafoor and Ali (2002) and Greuter (2005–2007). Part of the collection, the taxa accepted in Flora Palaestina (Feinbrun, 1978), was already incorporated in the separate type section. The rest of the taxa, including 64 type duplicates, fragments (Fig. 1), and other important specimens donated in 1935 to Eig by several European herbaria (herbarium boissier, Geneva (Gboiss.), Paris (P), berlin (b), and Vienna (W)) from the material of E. boissier, A. delile, etc., were preserved among the regular sheets in the general herbarium or among undetermined specimens. As a part of the reorganization, all located specimens *Author to whom correspondence should be addressed. Sheet in huJ with fragments of Anthemis leucanthemifolia boiss. and blanche, ex G-boiss. with handwriting of A. Eig. Israel Journal of Plant Sciences 56 2008 281 listed among the type material of Anthemis taxa, whether included in Flora Palaestina or not, were incorporated into the type section of the herbarium. moreover, the fragments of type specimens donated from other herbaria were also included in the type section because they were cited and illustrated in Eig’s revision. hence, the type collection of Anthemis of the huJ herbarium amounts to a total of 460 specimens. The process of computerization of the Anthemis types in the huJ herbarium included enumeration, documentation of the original collector(s) label, reference to specimen illustrations (when appropriate), and identiication and annotation of specimen status according to protologues and valid publications (mcneill et al., 2005). The aim of this paper is to remind systematists of the importance of contemporary revision of the species of the Flora Palaestina area. The last revisions of iraqi (Ghafoor and Ali, 2002) and European mediterranean Anthemis spp. (Greuter, 2005–2007) only partially included the species growing in israel. Furthermore, publication of the types in The hebrew university of Jerusalem provides an indication of the importance of the collection and its signiicance to any further work on this group. METHODs A list of the type specimens of Anthemis in the herbarium of The hebrew university is presented below. The taxa are sorted alphabetically by the name originally given upon rendering the type status, with infraspeciic taxa sorted alphabetically within each species. The taxon name is followed by its author and the reference is cited according to the iPni2 rules. The protologue specimen data is followed by an annotation in square brackets. The annotation includes additional data from the original label and technical information in the following order: number of sheets (when there are more than one), habitat, complete collecting date; altitude; history of the herbaria sheet, ex; reference to the plates in Eig’s revision [Pl.]; in Flora Palaestina part III (Feinbrun, 1978), [Fl. Pal. iii]; the kew photograph number for the Flora of iraq, [neg]; the type status (when required3) and the designator; any contradictions between protologue and label data, [?]; the huJ number. The names of the collectors—A. Eig, m. Zohary, A. Grizi, and n. Feinbrun—are given as the initial (as used by themselves): E, Z, G, and F, respectively. 2 The international Plant names index (2008). Published on the internet http://www.ipni.org [accessed 1 march 2008]. 3 As for Eig’s material we annotated the specimen status when it was different from a syntype, since he designates holotypes only exceptionally.
