A soft tissue infection caused by Kluyvera species in a previously healthy woman is described. Successful treatment required incision and drainage of the wound in addition to administration of antibiotics. Kluyvera species are indole positive, Voges-Proskauer negative members of the family Enterobacteriaceae. Previous reports of infection due to Kluyvera species suggest that the organism is never more than an opportunistic pathogen; however, we report the first case of infection in a previously healthy host.

Bilateral gluteal abscess caused by Kluyvera cryocrescens: a case reportKluyvera is a relatively new genus, belonging to family Enterobacteriaceae. This organism colonizes mainly respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. It has also been reported from various environmental sources. Due to a rise in immune-compromised states and ease of identification using automated methods rare organisms are now being reported with their role as potential opportunistic pathogens. Meticulous detailed identification and reporting of pathogens like Klyuvera to differentiate it from other members of Enterobacteriaceae can lead to solving the pathogenic importance of such organisms. We report a case of bilateral gluteal abscess due to Kluyvera cryocrescens in an obese diabetic adult male.

First report of Kocuria marina bloodstream infection unrelated to a central venous catheter: a mini-review on an emerging and under-recognized opportunistic pathogen2017 •
We report a case of sepsis by Kocuria marina in a 45-year-old woman carrying a midline venous catheter to provide total parenteral nutrition. Despite the finding of K. marina bacteraemia, no bacteria grew from the culture of the catheter tip. As the patient was affected with severe leg ulcers, K. marina bloodstream infection from a skin breakage other than CVC was supposed. K. marina is an emerging opportunistic agent deserving attention and probably under-recognized, as it can be misdiagnosed as Staphylococcus if only conventional microbiological analyses are performed for bacterial identification.
Recently there have been reports of gram-positive cocci which are morphologically similar to both Staphylococci and the Micrococci. These bacteria have been identified as Kocuria species with the help of automated identification system and other molecular methods including 16S rRNA (ribosomal ribonucleic acid) evaluation. Kocuria belongs to the family Micrococcaceae which also includes Staphylococcus species and Micrococcus species. Isolation and clinical significance of these bacteria from human specimens warrant great caution as it does not necessarily confirm infection due to their ubiquitous presence, and as a normal flora of skin and mucous membranes in human and animals. Most clinical microbiology laboratories ignore such bacteria as laboratory and specimen contaminants. With increasing reports of infections associated with these bacteria, it is now important for clinical microbiologists to identify and enumerate the virulence and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of such bacteria and assist clinicians in improving the patient care and management. We review the occurrence and clinical significance of Kocuria species.
