Journ. Hattori Bot. Lab. No. 71: 55-68 (Jan. 1992) NEW OR INTERESTING RECORDS OF BRAZILIAN BRYOPHYTES, III ALFONS SCHÄFER-VERWiMP1 Collection data and comments on distribution and ecology are given for 20 species which are believed new to Brazil. Among them are five species firstly reported for South America: Diplasiolejeunea alata Jov.-Ast, Ephemerum spinulosum Bruch & Schimp., Ganguleea anguhsa (Broth, & Dix.) Zand,, Lindbergia patentifoJia Dix., and Pohlia camptotrachela (Ren. & Gard.) Broth, Six genera are new to Brazil: Aureolejeunea, Lethocolea, Ganguleea, Lindbergia, Molendoa, and Taxiphyllum, Additional comments or extensions of ränge are provided for a further 13 taxa from the area. All specimens are deposited in the private herbarium of the author, duplicate specimens in different herbaria of the specialists respectively, and in SP. Abbreviations: SV... Alfons Schäfer-Verwimp V . . . Inge Verwimp Aureolejeunea fulva Schust. Rio de Janeiro: Itatiaia National Park, rocky slopes at the trail to the summit of the Agulhas Negras, on branchlets of shrubs and on rocks, 2600m alt., c. per., ca 22°22'S, 44°41'W, l June 1990, SV& V12754, det. Grolle and 12762, det. Gradstein; -, -, epiphytic in humid shrub and low forest between Brejo da Lapa and Abrigo Rebougas, 2300m alt., with numerous perianths and a few sporophytes, ca 22°22'S, 44°39'W, 3 June 1990, SV & V12794. Distr.: Venezuela, Colombia. New to Brazil. D. Vital has collected this species in 1974 in the same region of Itatiaia National Park äs SV & V 12794, at an altitude of 2200m. His specimen is mentioned in Gradstein (1975: 138) äs Omphalanthus sp. (Gradstein in litt. 1990). "Cololejeunea subscariosa Tixier" does not exist in this combination and was erroneously reported by Schäfer-Verwimp & Vital (1989). The cited specimen (SV & V 7023 c) belogs to Cololejeunea subcardiocarpa Tixier This species seems to be widely distributed in Brazil though earlier records (before 1989) are lacking. Two more localities: Amazonas: Manicore, secondary forest after cleared by fire on BR 319, epiphyllous, 70 m elev., 6°16'S, 62°32'W, 5 July 1988, SV 9743, det. Grolle. Hattori Bot. Lab. No. 71 1992 FIG. 1. Colura greig-smithii Jovet-Ast. Mediän leaf cells with oil bodies, one cell with chloroplasts; scale=10^m. The cell walls have no intermediate thickenings äs shown in flg. 58 by Jovet-Ast (1953: 293). Itapanhau, associated with Colura tenuicornis (Evans) Steph., and other Lejeuneaceae of the genera Aphanolejeunea,Drepanolejeunea, andLejeunea (Microlejeunea), 680m alt., 23°45'S, 46°07'W, 27 Sept. 1990, SV& V19169IA. Distr.: Trinidad, Surinam, French Guiana, Colombia, and recently reported from Amazonas, Brazil, by Schäfer-Verwimp (1989). A new state record for Säo Paulo means a considerable ränge extension for this rather rarely collected hepatic. The oil bodies of Colura greig-smithii are figured and described for the first time (erroneously mentioned in the introduction by Schäfer-Verwimp 1989). In median leaf cells oil bodies 2-4, rarely 5, spherical - ovoid to ellipsoidal - fusiform, often irregularly ovoid - ellipsoidal or angular, finely but distinctly granulose-papillose, ca 1.5-4/2mX 3-8 ^m; in basal cells .oil bodies 4-8, in marginal cells oil bodies generally fewer and smaller than in median leaf cells. ' " ' Distr.: Diplasiolejeunea cobrensis was previously known only from Cuba (type) (Reyes 1982) and a second collection from Guyana recently reported by Gradstein and Hekking (1989). Some morphological details of this rarely collected species have previously not been described: The plants are yellow-green in fresh material, rather small, nearly l mm broad, when dry only 0.5-0.6mm broad, to 7(8) mm long. Beside the large basal ocellus - in our material ca 50 X 6075 ßm - there are other scattered ocelli, mostly 3-4 per lobe, smaller (ca 24-45 /um long) than the basal ocellus, and visible only in fresh material. The perianth is figured and described here for the first time (fig. 2). It is half emerged, ca 650//m long X 440ßm wide, irregularly oval to obovate in outline, with 5 keels, apex with a very short beak. The oil bodies shown in fig. 2.9 are almost surely in a phase of decomposition from a previously botryoidal nature. Gynoecia terminal on main axis, £ involucral leaves with lobe similar to the lobe of stem leaves, obovate-oblong, falcate; involucral underleaves ovate-elliptical, twice äs long äs broad, 0.2-0.25 bilobed at apex, lobes triangulär; androecia in autoecious and/or paroecious position at the same plant. Schuster (1970) placedD. cobrensis in the new subgenus Austrokjeuneopsis which he described with "scattered ocelli of lamina totally lacking". As the species has scattered ocelli it should be excluded from the subgenus Austrolejeuneopsis. Diplasiolejeunea pauckertii (Nees) Steph. All cited specimens with numerous propagula. Distr.: Europe, Asia, northern Africa, North, Central, and South America. New to Brazil. In view of the nature of the collection sites the species could be easily introduced into the area. At the first locality cited above there was found Pseudoscleropodium purum (Hedw.) Fleisch, which was probably introduced into the area, too (SchaferVerwimp 1989). In Monte Verde there are many weekened houses of Europeans who have brought numerous higher plants from their native countries to Brazil for their gardens. So in all probability Didymodon rigidulus - or at least propagula of it - was introduced from Europe. Diphyscium ulei C. Müll. Distr.: Africa, West Indies, Central and South America (Brazil, Guianas, Ecuador). In southeastern Brazil it is a rather rare species. It was described äs L. brasiliense from two collections made by Schiffner in 1901 near Säo Paulo. Yano (1975: 146) supposed in her monographic treatment of Leucobryaceae that this species probably has disappeared äs a consequence of deforestation and pollution. Thus the species is redescovered after 90 years in southeastern Brazil. Recently L. molleri was reported by Yano (1982) from several collections from Brazilian Amazonia (äs L. brasiliense and L. calymperatum), EarlierL. brasiliense was regarded äs an endemic species of Brazil until Salazar-Allen (1986) placed both L. brasiliense and L. calymperatum under synonymy of L. molleri.
