Is a 5 mm rat calvarium defect really critical?2012 •
PURPOSE: To evaluate bone regeneration in critical defects in the rats' calvarium. METHODS: Eighteen rats Wistar were divided into three groups of six animals each according to the time of evaluation (15, 30 and 60 days). One calvarium defect of 5mm was made in the parietal bone of each animal under general anesthesia. After the time of evaluation, the animals were killed, when the bone was histological studied and classified according to the type of tissue found: fibrosis or bone. RESULTS: The results showed that in the group of 15 days, in five animals there was only fibrosis. In the group of 30 days, the process of regeneration was growing and in four animals was found bone, in three with partial filling and in the other one with complete filling of the defect. In the group of 60 days, out of the three animals with bone, two had a complete filling of the defect. CONCLUSIONS: There was no bone regeneration in critical defects in 15 days. There was regeneration in the most part...

Functional and Morphological Adaptations to Aging in Knee Extensor Muscles of Physically Active Men2013 •
It is not known if a physically active lifestyle, without systematic training, is sufficient to combat age-related muscle and strength loss. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate if the maintenance of a physically active lifestyle prevents muscle impairments due to aging. To address this issue, we evaluated 33 healthy men with similar physical activity levels (IPAQ = 2) across a large range of ages. Functional (torque-angle and torque-velocity relations) and morphological (vastus lateralis muscle architecture) properties of the knee extensor muscles were assessed and compared between three age groups: young adults (30 ± 6 y), middle-aged subjects (50 ± 7 y) and elderly subjects (69 ± 5 y). Isometric peak torques were significantly lower (30% to 36%) in elderly group subjects compared with the young adults. Concentric peak torques were significantly lower in the middle aged (18% to 32%) and elderly group (40% to 53%) compared with the young adults. Vastus lateralis thi...

Mestizo Identity and Language Rights of the Indigenous Populations of Mexico2018 •
In many cases, changes in the of official status of a given language(s) have involved intense public debates and even strong political reactions: this is one of the most contested arenas regarding both nationalism and minority rights. However, Mexico in 2002-2008 went from having a single de facto national language (Spanish) to recognize almost 70 "national languages", and granting specific rights for their speakers (e.g. public education) - this, without creating any political rift, opposition or in fact, almost no public debate. I claim that such "non-case" of conflict regarding language recognition can be explained by the official nationalist doctrine of "mestizaje" that, at the same time segregated and diminished indigenous peoples, paradoxically also facilitated the recognition of key identity characteristics as inherent parts of the modern Mexican nation as a whole. Even more strikingly, such treatment led to the recognition of some verifiable foreign indigenous languages as "national" ones. For that, I study Congressional debates and bills leading to the approval in 2002 of the General Law of Linguistic Rights of the Indigenous Peoples, as well as other official documents.

Dual Epitope Targeting and Enhanced Hexamerization by DR5 Antibodies as a Novel Approach to Induce Potent Antitumor Activity Through DR5 Agonism2020 •
Higher-order death receptor 5 (DR5) clustering can induce tumor cell death; however, therapeutic compounds targeting DR5 have achieved limited clinical efficacy. We describe HexaBody-DR5/DR5, an equimolar mixture of two DR5-specific IgG1 antibodies with an Fc-domain mutation that augments antibody hexamerization after cell surface target binding. The two antibodies do not compete for binding to DR5 as demonstrated using binding competition studies, and binding to distinct epitopes in the DR5 extracellular domain was confirmed by crystallography. The unique combination of dual epitope targeting and increased IgG hexamerization resulted in potent DR5 agonist activity by inducing efficient DR5 outside-in signaling and caspase-mediated cell death. Preclinical studies in vitro and in vivo demonstrated that maximal DR5 agonist activity could be achieved independent of Fc gamma receptor–mediated antibody crosslinking. Most optimal agonism was observed in the presence of complement complex ...
