Gonçalo Sampaio authored 103 new nam es of lichens, comprising one new genus, 60 new species, 14 new
infraspecific taxa, 25 new com binations and two nomina nova. In addition, he proposed 42 “names” that were
not validly published, 18 of these being simple nomina nuda and 21 apparently representing invalid attempts
to publish new combinations. The type m aterial is deposited in the Herbarium of University of Porto (PO),
except in three cases. Apart from a few specimens from Spain, the material derives from Portugal. For the
names of all new taxa the type collections are listed, either a holotype or a lectotype (usually here designated).
In addition, a few lichen names authored by M aurice Bouly de Lesdain or William Nylander and based on
Portuguese m aterial preserved at PO are listed with indications of type.
KEYWORDS: herbarium, lichens, Portugal, Sampaio, Spain, typification.
INTRODUCTION
The Herbarium of the University of Porto (PO),
located in the Institute of Botany “Dr. Gonçalo
Sampaio”, is one of the most important on the Iberian
Peninsula with about 122,000 specimens belonging to all
plant groups. The lichen herbarium includes about 6000
specimens and comprises a general herbarium with specimens from Europe, a Portuguese herbarium with local
specimens, and several special collections, the most
important being Gonçalo Sampaio’s collection with c.
4000 specimens, mostly from Portugal.
Gonçalo António da Silva Ferreira Sampaio
(1865–1937), Professor of Botany in the University of
Porto, was a renowned investigator mainly through his
studies on vascular plants, but he also studied non-vascular groups, mainly lichens (Pires de Lima, 1938). In
fact, for over two decades Sampaio collected lichens all
over Portugal, mainly in the provinces of Minho, Trásos-Montes e Alto Douro and Douro Litoral.
According to our interpretation, Sampaio authored
the name of one lichen genus, 87 names of lichen species
(60 described as new species), and 14 names of infraspecific taxa. However, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between new names and new nomenclatural combinations in Sampaio’s papers. This is due to his usual
custom of citing only one author for a name even in
nomenclatural combinations, viz., the author of the combination. In some cases (especially in Sampaio & Crespí,
1927) the epithet used and the taxonomic relationships
expressed allow one to presume that Sampaio intended to
make new combinations, so that it is difficult to interpret
whether the names should be considered nomina nuda or
combinations without basionym author citation. In the
simple case in which the presumed new combination
appears alone, these have been treated as technically
nomina nuda, not being validly published under the provisions of Art. 33.2 of the ICBN (Greuter & al., 2000),
even where Sampaio’s intent to publish a new combination seems clear. In a number of cases, however, the situation is complicated by the fact that the presumed new
combination has a synonym associated with it. If not
treated as a new combination, the name would be validly published as an illegitimate replacement name for the
cited synonym, which was clearly not in the least
Sampaio’s intention. Art. 33.6, dealing with incorrect
citation of a basionym, treats as validly published combinations that would otherwise be validly published
either as nomina nova or as names of new taxa, whereas
Art. 33.2 specifies that, where no basionym is cited at all,
a presumed new combination is validly published if it
would otherwise be validly published as the name of a

new taxon, rather surprisingly making no mention of
nomina nova. On the advice of the Nomenclature Editor,
and solely for the purposes of this list, we have treated
these names, not as heterotypic nomina nova which
could be very disturbing nomenclaturally, but as though
they were new combinations, albeit not validly published
under Art. 33.2. For completeness, and to avoid possible
confusion, all names published by Sampaio are listed and
an indication given as to the actual authorship of the
name, if it is not, in fact, that claimed by Sampaio.
Sampaio sometimes used the abbreviation “r.” in
naming infraspecific taxa. This is probably an abbreviation for “raça” (race); these infraspecific taxa are technically unranked and are so indicated in the list.
Three new species and one variety were described by
Sampaio together with the French lichenologist Marcelo
Bouly de Lesdain. In addition, some type specimens of
lichen names published by other authors were found by
us in Sampaio’s herbarium and they are also listed. They
comprise two new species described by Marcelo Bouly
de Lesdain alone, who received the Portuguese material
from G. Sampaio, and nine new species described by
William Nylander from specimens sent by Isaac Newton
(1840–1906), who was an important Porto Herbarium
collector.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
We have analysed the herbarium specimens used by
G. Sampaio, W. Nylander and Bouly de Lesdain comparing them with the original descriptions in order to recognize the holotypes, and when there are more than one
original specimen we have designated lectotypes or indicated syntypes.
It is important to note the presence of type material
in the exsiccata edited and distributed by G. Sampaio:
Lichenes de Portugal, Fasc. I-III (nos. 1-300) March
1923; this set of exsiccata is in PO and (according to
Stafleu & Cowan, 1985) also in COLO, FH, LD, M and
UPS, but Sayre (1969) indicates that 15 sets in all were
prepared. The exsiccata have printed labels but no separate catalogue was published.
RESULTS
In the following lists of names of taxa, we have cited
the paper where the original description was published,
the Porto herbarium number of the type specimen, and
the type category, together with data on the label; we
have added the country and the province in brackets. If a
taxon received more than one name from Sampaio, that
is indicated too. Most of the specimens were collected
772

and identified by G. Sampaio, who was very careful with
his notes. We cite both the paper where the original
description was made, and also the page reference for the
original description in the compilation of Sampaio´s
lichen papers (Sampaio, 1970).
Lists of the names of taxa described by G. Sampaio
together with B. de Lesdain, by M. Bouly de Lesdain,
alone, and by W. Nylander, are presented after the main
list.
We have used the recent Iberian check-list of the
lichens and lichenicolous fungi (Llimona & Hladun,
2001) to indicate the present taxonomic status of the
Sampaio taxa. The species names marked with an asterisk (*) are under “Nomina Inquirenda” in that work.
Buellia jorgei, Lecania badiella, Lecanora lisbonensis,
Lemmopsis affinis, Ramalina portuensis and Rinodina
lesdainii are accepted species in Llimona & Hladun
(2001).

The entries are distinguished typographically as
between names for which types were sought (bold italic),
validly published names for which selection of a type is
not appropriate, e.g., new combinations (italic), and
those binary designations (“names”) that were used but
not validly published by Sampaio (“italic in double
quotes”). For only two names of new taxa described by
Sampaio could types not be located, those of Pertusaria
lutescens var. conimbricensis and Physma hispanicum.

no suggestion that Sampaio was basing his variety on

fact, Rhizocarpon lavatum (Fr.) Hazsl., as stated in
Llimona & Hladun (2001), but Rhizocarpon lindsayanum subsp. kittilense Räsänen (Runemark 1956) (=

Giralt & Mayrhofer (1995).
Remarks: (1) Sampaio (1924) also cited a syntype
from Póvoa de Varzim: Laundes which was not located.
(2) The nº 198 of the exsiccata Lichenes de Portugal, was
reported by Giralt & Mayrhofer (1995: 142) as isotype;
but that is not correct because its locality (Póvoa de
Varzim: Anjos) was not listed in the protologue by G.
Sampaio.

and other herbaria).
Remarks: (1) The name Rinodina confragosa var.
olivieri was apparently first published in Sampaio, Lich.
Portugal nº 194, but as a nomen nudum because the label
has not a description. Mayrhofer & al. (1993: 301) cite
