Abstract: BIOTA BIOMAPS aims at the analysis of spatial patterns of African phytodiversity at regional to continental scale. Using an inventory-based biodiversity mapping approach, a computer based map of total vascular plant species richness for continental Africa has been generated (using diversity figures for some 470 geographical units).

Understanding the patterns of biodiversity distribution and what influences them is a fundamental pre-requisite for effective conservation and sustainable utilisation of biodiversity. Such knowledge is increasingly urgent as biodiversity responds to the ongoing effects of global climate change. Nowhere is this more acute than in species-rich tropical Africa, where so little is known about plant diversity and its distribution. In this paper, we use RAINBIO - one of the largest mega-databases of tropical African vascular plant species distributions ever compiled - to address questions about plant and growth form diversity across tropical Africa. The filtered RAINBIO dataset contains 609,776 georeferenced records representing 22,577 species. Growth form data are recorded for 97% of all species. Records are well distributed, but heterogeneous across the continent. Overall, tropical Africa remains poorly sampled. When using sampling units (SU) of 0.5°, just 21 reach appropriate collectio...

African ecosystems comprise a wealthy repository of biodiversity with a high proportion of native and endemic plant species, which makes them biologically unique and providers of a wide range of ecosystem services. A large part of African populations, in both rural and urban areas, depends on plants for their survival and welfare, but many ecosystems are being degraded, mostly due to the growing impacts of climate change and other anthropogenic actions and environmental problems. Loss of habitat and biodiversity affects livelihoods, water supply and food security, and reduces the resilience of ecosystems in the African continent. Knowledge of the huge African plant and ecosystem diversity, and on the structure, composition and processes involved in vegetation dynamics, is crucial to promote their sustainable use and to preserve one of the most understudied regions in the world. This Special Issue aimed to gather contributions that update and improve such knowledge.

Abstract: Although South Africa is well known for its incredible biodiversity, targeted efforts are still required to accelerate the discovery and description of the still-unknown species in this floristically mega-diverse country. Such targeted efforts would never be effective if there is no scientifically-informed knowledge of the extent of the country’s biodiversity. In the present study, the data on current knowledge of plant richness in the country, expert taxonomists’ opinions, and statistical modelling technique was integrated to predict what might still be missing in South Africa’s flora. Depending on the approach used, the findings indicate that there currently might be 1400-1575 undescribed vascular plant species in South Africa. The current estimated value of undescribed vascular plants can be integrated into existing information because the value of the unknown vascular plant species generated from the model are close to estimates from expert opinion. It would take appro...

On a result of K. Masuda concerning reaction-diffusion equationsWe give a simplified proof of a recent result due to K.Masuda [Hokkaido Math. J. 12, 360-370 (1983; Zbl 0529.35037)] concerning the global existence and asymptotic behavior of non-negative solutions to some reaction-diffusion systems. This new method also provides an analogous result under weaker growth assumptions on the nonlinear terms.
