An annotated checklist of smut fungi (Basidiomycota: Ustilaginomycotina and Microbotryales) in Slovenia By Matthias Lutz & Kálmán Vánky Summary Lutz, M. & Vánky, K. 2009. An annotated checklist of smut fungi (Basidiomycota: Ustilaginomycotina and Microbotryales) in Slovenia. Lidia 7: 33-72. Seventytwo species of smut fungi (Ustilaginomycotina p.p. and Microbotryales), belonging to 19 genera on 84 host plant species are listed from Slovenia. The records are based mainly on a survey of Lindtner (1950) on the smut fungi of Yugoslavia (including Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia) and on more than 75 collections that were made particularly in the Triglav National Park between 1998 and 2006. New species: Antherospora neglecta Vánky (on Muscari neglectum Guss. ex Ten.), Melanoxa oxalidiellae M. Lutz, Vánky & R. Bauer (on Oxalis acetosella L.) New records: Anthracoidea arenaria (Syd.) Nannf. (on Carex brizoides L.), A. capillaris Kukkonen (on Carex capillaris L.), A. curvulae Vánky & Kukkonen (on Carex curvula ssp. curvula All.), Entyloma fergussonii (Berk. & Broome) Plowr. (on Myosotis sylvatica Hoffm.), E. microsporum (Unger) J. Schröt. (on Ranunculus tuberosus Lapeyr., R. repens L.), Microbotryum intermedium (J. Schröt.) Vánky (on Scabiosa triandra L.), M. violaceum (Pers.: Pers.) G. Deml & Oberw. (on Silene hayekiana Hand.-Maz. & Janch.), Thecaphora melandrii (Syd.) Vánky & M. Lutz (on Silene latifolia ssp. alba (Mill.) Greut. & Burdet), Tilletia olida (Riess) J. Schröt. in Cohn. (on Brachypodium pinnatum (L.) P. Beauv. New host records: Anthracoidea sempervirentis Vánky (on Carex ferruginea ssp. ferruginea Scop., C. mucronata All.), Microbotryum dianthorum (Liro) H. Scholz & I. Scholz (on Dianthus hyssopifolius L., D. superbus ssp. alpestris Celak., D. superbus ssp. superbus L., D. sylvestris ssp. sylvestris Wulfen), M. lychnidis-dioicae (DC. ex Liro) G. Deml & Oberw. (on Silene dioica (L.) Clairv.), M. scabiosae (Sowerby) G. Deml & Prillinger (on Knautia longifolia (Waldst. & Kit.) W. D. J. Koch), M. silenes-inflatae (DC. ex Liro) G. Deml & 34 Oberw., (on S. vulgaris ssp. glareosa (Jord.) Marsden-Jones & Turrill), Schizonella melanogramma (DC.) J. Schröt. (on Carex firma Host, C. sempervirens Vill.), Thecaphora saponariae (F. Rudolphi) Vánky (on Dianthus barbatus L., Petrorhagia saxifraga (L.) Link), Urocystis floccosa (Wallr.) D. M. Hend. (on Helleborus odorus Willd.) Key words: Microbotryales, Ustilaginomycotina plant pathogens, Slovenia, smut fungi, Adresses of authors: Matthias Lutz, Rappenberghalde 31, D-72070 Tübingen, Germany, email: matthias.lutz@uni-tuebingen.de Kálmán Vánky, Herbarium Ustilaginales Vánky (HUV), Gabriel-Biel-Str. 5, D72076 Tübingen, Germany, email: vanky.k@cityinfonetz.de INTRODUCTION Between 1998 and 2006 the first author got to visit Slovenia for several times. Especially in the context of three botanical excursions with the Spezielle Botanik & Mykologie of the Universität Tübingen to the Triglav National Park, during which several collections of interesting smut fungi were made. Since no current information about smut fungi in Slovenia was available and, according to D. Jurc (Slovenian Forestry Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia), nobody was working on that subject, the idea was to revise the survey of Lindtner (1950) on the smut fungi of Yugoslavia referring to the data concerning Slovenia and applying the current nomenclature and to add the data of our own collections and of few smut specimens preserved in GZU (Herbarium of the Karl-FranzensUniversität Graz, Austria) which were kindly provided by Ch. Scheuer. The amount of species and host species that are new records for Slovenia including one species new for science that were made in a relatively short period of time clearly points at the importance of such studies if one will satisfy the oft-quoted claim of knowing about and preserving biodiversity. Contemporary taxonomic mycological work in Slovenia was mostly performed by the voluntary members of the Mycological Association of Slovenia and was dedicated to macromycetes. Their data on species and distribution were collected in the book “Fungi of Slovenia” (Jurc et al. 2005). However, besides minor old records, this dataset includes only little knowledge about micromycetes. All data included in the book are presented also on internet (http://www.gozdis.si/departments/forestprotection/boletus/arealnekarte/slo/bi.ht m). According to D. Jurc further smut specimens from Slovenia may be included in the following collections that should be checked in future: 35 LJM (Herbarium of the Natural History Museum, Ljubljana, Slovenia): Collections of W. Voss, S. Robic, S. Robic & V. Plemel, Flora exsiccata AustroHungarica, Fungi europaei; LJU (Herbarium of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia): Mycotheca Thümen/Voss, Mycotheca Universalis (F. von Thümen) Herbarium of F. Dolšak (Flora Carniolica, Flora Sloveniae); W (Herbarium of the Natural History Museum, Vienna, Austria): Collections of K. Reichinger, K. von Keissler, O. Jaap; WU (Herbarium of the University of Vienna, Austria): Collections of Unger. MATERIALS AND METHODS Collected smutted plants were pressed and dried. Spores of smut fungi were studied in a light-microscope with oil immersion lens, at a magnification of x1000. For this purpose, dried spores were rehydrated in lacotophenol by gently heating to the boiling point. Identified specimens were labelled and preserved either in HUV (Herbarium Ustilaginales Vánky, Tübingen, Germany), TUB (Herbarium of the Spezielle Botanik & Mykologie, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, Germany), GZU (Herbarium of the Institut für Botanik, KarlFranzens-Universität Graz, Austria), or in the private collections of D. Begerow and M. Hendrichs. The nomenclature follows Bauer et al. (2008), Lutz et al. (2005, in prep.), Vánky (1994, 2001, 2005), Vánky & Lutz (2007) for fungal taxa, and the Flora Alpina (Aeschimann et al. 2004) for host plants. RESULTS Specimens from the collecting trips to Slovenia complemented with data from GZU, and HUV and from Literature resulted in 72 species of smut fungi, belonging to 19 genera on 84 host plant species from Slovenia, which are listed below. Lenart for help with the language of the Lindtner paper, to C. Scheuer for checking the herbarium in Graz and the loan of specimens, and to F. Oberwinkler for the opportunity to work at the Spezielle Botanik & Mykologie in Tübingen. Last but not least we are grateful to D. Jurc from the Slovenian Forestry Institute, Ljubljana for his extensive help with Slovenian literature and the correct expression of Slovenian names. 75 76 HOST PLANT - SMUT FUNGUS INDEX Aconitum lycoctonum ssp. vulparia - Urocystis irregularis Aconitum vulparia = A. lycoctonum ssp. vulparia Agrostis alba = A. stolonifera Agrostis stolonifera - Tilletia sphaerococca Alisma plantago-aquatica - Doassansia alismatis Allium cepa - Urocystis magica Andropogon ischaemum = Bothriochloa ischaemum Anemone hepatica = Hepatica nobilis Anemone trifolia L. - Urocystis anemones Anemone nemorosa - Urocystis anemones Arrhenaterum elatius - Ustilago avenae Bellis perennis - Entyloma bellidis Bothriochloa ischaemum - Sporisorium andropogonis Brachypodium pinnatum - Tilletia olida Bromus secalinus - Ustilago bullata Calendula officinalis - Entyloma calendulae Carex alba - Anthracoidea caricis-albae Carex brizoides - Anthracoidea arenariae Carex capillaris - Anthracoidea capillaris Carex caryophyllea - Anthracoidea caryophylleae, Schizonella melanogramma Carex curvula ssp. curvula - Anthracoidea curvulae Carex digitata - Anthracoidea irregularis, Schizonella melanogramma Carex ferruginea ssp. ferruginea - Anthracoidea sempervirentis Carex firma - Anthracoidea sempervirentis, Schizonella melanogramma Carex flacca - Anthracoidea pratensis Carex glauca = C. flacca Carex hostiana - Anthracoidea hostianae Carex hornschuchiana = C. hostiana Carex montana - Anthracoidea caricis Carex mucronata - Anthracoidea sempervirentis Carex ornithopoda - Anthracoidea irregularis Carex pilosa - Anthracoidea pilosae Carex praecox = C. caryophyllea Carex sempervirens - Anthracoidea sempervirentis, Schizonella melanogramma Carex verna = C. caryophyllea Chrysosplenium alternifolium - Entyloma chrysosplenii Colchicum autumnale - Urocystis colchici Corydalis cava - Entyloma corydalis Dianthus barbatus - Thecaphora saponariae Dianthus hyssopifolius - Microbotryum dianthorum Dianthus superbus ssp. alpestris - Microbotryum dianthorum Dianthus superbus ssp. superbus - Microbotryum dianthorum 77 Dianthus sylvestris ssp. sylvestris - Microbotryum dianthorum Digitaria sanguinalis - Ustilago syntherismae Eryngium campestre - Entyloma eryngii Ficaria verna = Ranunculus ficaria Galium mollugo - Melanotaenium endogenum Glyceria aquatica = G. maxima Glyceria maxima - Ustilago filiformis Helleborus dumetorum - Urocystis floccosa Helleborus niger ssp. macranthus - Urocystis floccosa Helleborus odorus - Urocystis floccosa Hepatica nobilis - Urocystis syncocca Hordeum vulgare ssp. vulgare - Ustilago nuda Hottonia palustris - Doassansia hottoniae Juncus bufonius - Tolyposporium junci Knautia arvensis - Microbotryum flosculorum Knautia longifolia - Microbotryum scabiosae Melandryum album = Silene latifolia ssp. alba Molinia caerulea - Neovossia moliniae Muscari comosum - Antherospora vaillantii Muscari neglectum - Antherospora neglecta Myosotis sylvatica - Entyloma fergussonii Oxalis acetosella - Melanoxa oxalidiellae Panicum miliaceum - Sporisorium destruens Papaver somniferum - Entyloma fuscum Petrorhagia saxifraga - Thecaphora saponariae Picris hieracioides ssp. hieracioides - Entyloma picridis Polygonum hydropiper - Sphacelotheca hydropiperis Polygonum mite - Microbotryum cordae, Sphacelotheca hydropiperis Polygonum viviparum - Microbotryum bistortarum Ranunculus acer = Ranunculus acris ssp. acris Ranunculus acris ssp. acris - Entyloma ranunculi-repentis Ranunculus ficaria ssp. ficaria - Entyloma ficariae Ranunculus repens - Entyloma microsporum, E. ranunculi-repentis, Urocystis ranunculi Ranunculus tuberosus - Entyloma microsporum Rhynchospora alba - Ustanciosporium montagnei Saponaria officinalis - Microbotryum saponariae, Thecaphora saponariae Scabiosa triandra - Microbotryum intermedium Scilla bifolia - Antherospora scillae Secale cereale - Urocystis occulta Setaria glauca = S. pumila Setaria pumila - Macalpinomyces neglectus Silene dioica - Microbotryum lychnidis-dioicae Silene hayekiana - Microbotryum violaceum Silene latifolia ssp. alba - Microbotryum lychnidis-dioicae, Thecaphora melandrii Silene pratensis = Silene latifolia ssp. alba 78 Silene vulgaris ssp. glareosa - Microbotryum silenes-inflatae Silene vulgaris ssp. vulgaris - Microbotryum silenes-inflatae Sorghum bicolor - Sporisorium sorghi Sorghum vulgare = S. bicolor Stachys alopecuros ssp. alopecuros - Microbotryum betonicae Succisa pratensis - Microbotryum succisae Symphytum officinale - Entyloma serotinum Tragopogon pratensis ssp. orientalis - Microbotryum tragopogonis-pratensis Triticum aestivum - Tilletia caries Triticum vulgare = T. aestivum Tunica saxifraga = Petrorhagia saxifraga Petrorhagia saxifraga - Microbotryum dianthorum Viola odorata - Urocystis violae Zea mays - Ustilago maydis REFERENCES Aeschimann, D., Lauber, K., Moser, D.
