Comparative active compounds and antioxidant activity between the sweet- and sour-type star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.) In VitroBackground: Star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.) is seasonal and originates from many Southeast Asia countries, including Thailand. Previous evidence claimed that it has various antioxidative compounds such as phenolics, saponins, flavonoid C-glycosides, tannin and L-ascorbic acid. In Thailand, the sweet-type of star fruit (SF) is cultivated and marketed more than the sour-type, but their different antioxidant and active compounds between both types have not been investigated. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the active compounds and anti-oxidant activity between sweet- and sour-type SF in vitro. Materials and methods: Active compounds such as total phenolic compound, total flavonoids and L-ascorbic acid in extracts were evaluated between sweet- and sour-type SF crude extracts by using Folin-Ciocalteau reagent, aluminum chloride colorimetric assay and high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. Antioxidant activity on scavenging radicals such as the 2,2'-azino-bis...

Specific and Non-Specific Parameters Based on Simplicia and Ethyl Acetate Fractions of Star Fruit Leaves (Averrhoa Carambola L.)2020 •
Objective: Star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.) is a plant with numerous benefits, including anti-skin inflammation properties. The aim of the presentstudy was to evaluate simplicia and ethyl acetate fractions of star fruit leaves collected from three regions in Indonesia, including Depok, Subang, andSukabumi, and to characterize specific and non-specific parameters. Methods: Extraction was performed through maceration. Next, liquid partitioning was performed to obtain ethyl acetate fractions. Chromatogramsfor simplicia and ethyl acetate fractions for samples from three regions were obtained using chloroform: methanol:water (8:2:0.5) with apigenin asthe standard. Results: The yield of the ethyl acetate fraction from the star fruit leaves was 4.2–6.2%. Water content, total ash content, and acid-soluble ash contentswere 4.79%, 1.55%, and 0.064%, respectively, and total flavonoid levels were 14.63–22.14 mg QE/g of a fraction. The water-soluble and ethanol-solubleextracts were 14.32% and 9....
Citrus sinensis has intensively been used for its nutritional and therapeutic values, usually attributed to their antioxidant properties. Several studies have earlier focused on its fruits, seeds, oils, juice and flowers. This study focuses on leaves and aimed at determining radical scavenging capacity (RSC), antiradical power(ARP), total polyphenols (TPC) and flavonoids (TFC) content of the aqueous (AE), hydroethanolic (HEE) and ethanolic (EE) extracts and their activities on free radicals DPPH • , ABTS+ and NO. Phenolic compounds of all the extracts were measured by Folin-Ciocalteu assays. RSC of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH •), 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS+) and nitric oxide (NO •) radicals were measured. Also, the reducing power of extracts on phosphomolybdenum was evaluated by total antioxidant capacity (TAC) assay, antiradical power and EC 50 were determined. All the extracts possessed high TPC ranging from 306.67 ± 43.72 to 353.33 ± 30.55 µg of Eq Catechin /mg respectively for EA and EE. EE, EA, EC showed their ability to scavenge all the radicals and an important reducing power. Aqueous extracts presented the lower EC 50 (mg/ml) 4.60, 4.27, and 4.01x10-4 with DPPH • , ABTS + , NO • respectively and the highest ARP. Many correlations observed between TAC and ABTS +-RSC (r = 0.958, p<0.001), TAC and DPPH •-RSC (r= 0.934, p<0.001); TPC and DPPH •-RSC (r=0.738, p<0.05) justified its ability. leaves' Aqueous Extracts possess high radical scavenging activity and total polyphenols, good TAC and ARP. Leaves' extracts can be used as natural antioxidant source and deserve to be further explored for biological activities.

Quantitative Analysis of Bioactive Compounds In Extract and Fraction of Star Fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.) Leaves Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography2021 •
Exposed to the pollution has led to generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in human skin. ROS generated cause many skin diseases such as skin-aging, inflammation, melanogenesis and skin cancer. ROS is a family of oxygen-based free radicals that contains or capable of producing an unpaired electron. Antioxidant is a molecule that can inhibit the reaction of free radical from ROS by donating its electron. Averrhoa bilimbi Linn. (AVBL) is one of the potent natural antioxidant belongs to the group of Oxalidaceae which can be widely found in Asia including Malaysia. Traditionally, this plant has been used to treat many diseases such as cough, itchiness, pimple, fever and inflammation. As a result, much attention has been directed towards the studies regarding the potential of this plant in treating disease. The present study was undertaken to assess the antioxidant activity of AVBL leaves extract. The AVBL leaves were extracted using sonicator with ethanol and distilled water as two...
