Morphophenological characterization of ornamental ginger and selection for landscape useMany species of Zingiber have great ornamental potential, due to durability and exotic appearance of the inflorescences. Despite its large phenotypic variability, they are scarcely exploited or not yet exploited regarding the ornamental potential. To conserve potential ornamental genotypes, and subsidize breeding program, the Agronomic Institute (IAC) maintain a Germoplasm Collection of Ornamental Zingiberales with promising accessions, including Zingiber. Wild ginger is a low herbaceous plant. The stem consists of a branched creeping rhizome at or just below the soil surface. Soft-hairy leaves arise in pairs annually from rhizome branches. Petioles can be up to 20 cm long, elevating the 7—25 mm wide kidney-shaped leaf blades above the forest floor. Small flowers appear in the spring shortly after the leaves have expanded. Typically, one must push the leaves aside in order to glimpse the jug-like flowers. A single flower stalk appears between the paired leaf bases, but it is short and barely lifts the flower above the soil surface. Each flower consists of 3 fused sepals that enclose 12 stamens and a 3-lobed pistil; petals are absent. The fused sepals constitute a pale green bell-like tube that ranges from 8 – 16 mm long; their divergent tips are maroon to brown. Present study was conducted to compare the morphological, anatomical and histochemical features of exotic species Costus pictus with its related C. speciosus, introduced in Peninsular India during the recent past. Identifying features of C. pictus is well documented through the present study with samples collected from different agro climatic regions along with its closely related species C. speciosus, which is available from the past even in wild without any characteristically reported medicinal property. The comparative study of fresh specimen shows distinctive features for identification with regard to morphological and anatomical characters at its flowering condition. The dried raw drug can be distinguished with the analysis for the presence of cuboidal solid crystal in the leaf mesophyll. Result of comparative study of leaf suggests that C. pictus leaves do not show the presence of cuboidal ergastic crystal in their leaf mesophyll where as C. speciosus leaves possess the same.

Genome assemblies and comparison of two Neotropical spiral gingers: Costus pulverulentus and C. lasiusThe spiral gingers (Costus L.) are a pantropical genus of herbaceous perennial monocots; the Neotropical clade of Costus radiated rapidly in the past few million years into over 60 species. The Neotropical spiral gingers have a rich history of evolutionary and ecological research that can motivate and inform modern genetic investigations. Here, we present the first 2 chromosome-level genome assemblies in the genus, for C. pulverulentus and C. lasius, and briefly compare their synteny. We assembled the C. pulverulentus genome from a combination of short-read data, Chicago and Dovetail Hi-C chromatin-proximity sequencing, and alignment with a linkage map. We annotated the genome by mapping a C. pulverulentus transcriptome and querying mapped transcripts against a protein database. We assembled the C. lasius genome with Pacific Biosciences HiFi long reads and alignment to the C. pulverulentus genome. Characterization and selection of torch ginger for cut flowerTorch ginger, Etlingera elatior, is among the most cultivated tropical flower of its genus. Its great acceptability in the market led researchers to improve production characteristics and to adapt it for commercialization. This study aimed to characterize 10 genotypes of torch ginger in order to select and recommend them as cut flower. The experiment ran from Jan 2014 to Dec 2016 in Paulista, Brazil and nine agro-morphological characteristics were evaluated to build a grading system that determined their suitability for cut flower. The IAC 26 and IAC 34 genotypes were classified as poorly suitable, for they presented fresh mass exceeding 237 g. They also presented less than 19 flower stems per clump and only one month with ≥1 floral stem produced in 2015. About 3 lakhs tonnes of ginger are being produced annually from 47,641 ha land and the Northeast region is emerging as India’s organic ginger hub. A large number of tribal farmers still practice the traditional methods of cultivation. Ginger is cultivated in jhum lands, buns, Zabo lands, terraced lands and in plains. In the traditional methods of cultivation, farmers rely on organic inputs, local resources and practices. The Northeast region is rich in ginger diversity.
