In this work we are reporting the isolation by classical methods of chromatography of six polyketides from Penicillium herquei. The compounds citreorosein ( 1) , emodin ( 2) , janthinone ( 3) , citrinin ( 4) , citrinin H1 ( 5) and dicitrinol ( 6) were identified by spectral methods of 1D and 2D NMR and MS. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 were tested against promastigotes forms of Leishmania brasiliensis and 1 and 2 were also assayed against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis and showed good activity.

Screening of several fungi from the New Zealand International Collection of Microorganisms from Plants identified two strains of Penicillium, P. bissettii and P. glabrum, which exhibited antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus. Further investigation into the natural products of the fungi, through extraction and fractionation, led to the isolation of five known polyketide metabolites, penicillic acid (1), citromycetin (2), penialdin A (3), penialdin F (4), and myxotrichin B (5). Semi-synthetic derivatization of 1 led to the discovery of a novel dihydro (1a) derivative that provided evidence for the existence of the much-speculated open-chained form of 1. Upon investigation of the antimicrobial activities of the natural products and derivatives, both penicillic acid (1) and penialdin F (4) were found to inhibit the growth of Methicillin-resistant S. aureus. Penialdin F (4) was also found to have some inhibitory activity against...

Citrinin derivatives from the soil filamentous fungus Penicillium sp. H93182011 •
Investigation of a microbial fermentation organic extract of Penicillium sp. H9318 led to the isolation of a new isoquinolinone alkaloid, (5S)-3,4,5,7-tetramethyl-5,8-dihydroxyl-6(5H)-isoquinolinone (1), along with four known citrinin derivatives (2-5). Citrinin (2) exhibited significant inhibitory activity against Streptomyces 85E in the hyphae formation inhibition (HFI) assay, while compounds 1, 3-5 were not active when tested at 20 mg/disk in the HFI assay. Citrinin (2) further demonstrated a weak inhibitory activity against MCF-7 (IC50 71.93 µmol L-1), LNCaP (IC50 77.92 µmol L-1), LU-1 (147.85 µmol L-1) and KB (IC50 65.93 µmol L-1) cell lines, respectively, in the cytotoxicity assay.

A New Citrinin Derivative from the Indonesian Marine Sponge-Associated Fungus Penicillium citrinum2020 •
Sponge-associated fungi are attractive targets for the isolation of bioactive natural products with different pharmaceutical purposes. In this investigation, 20 fungi were isolated from 10 different sponge specimens. One isolate, the fungus Penicillium citrinum strain WK-P9, showed activity against Bacillus subtilis JH642 when cultivated in malt extract medium. One new and three known citrinin derivatives were isolated from the extract of this fungus. The structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, as well as LC-HRMS. Their antibacterial activity against a set of common human pathogenic bacteria and fungi was tested. Compound 2 showed moderate activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis ATCC607 with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 32 µg/mL. Compound 4 exhibited moderate growth inhibition against Bacillus subtilis JH642, B. megaterium DSM32, and M. smegmatis ATCC607 with MICs of 16, 16, and 32 µg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, weak activities of 64 µg/mL against B. subtilis DSM10 and S. aureus ATCC25923 were observed for compound 4.

Cytotoxic and Antimicrobial Compounds from the Marine-Derived Fungus, Penicillium Species2018 •
The organic extract of liquid cultures of the marine-derivedsp. was investigated. Fractionation of the extracts of the fungus led to the purification and identification of two new compounds, penicillatides A () and B (), together with the previously reported cyclo(-Pro-Phe) () and cyclo(-Pro-Phe) (). The structures of compounds-were assigned by extensive interpretation of their NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). The antiproliferative and cytotoxic activities of the compounds against three human cancer cell lines as well as their antimicrobial activity against several pathogens were evaluated. Compounds-displayed variable cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities.

Brocaenols A−C: Novel Polyketides from a Marine-Derived Penicillium b rocae2003 •
Chemical investigation of a Penicillium brocae, obtained from a tissue sample of a Fijian Zyzyya sp. sponge, yielded two known diketopiperazines and three novel cytotoxic polyketides, brocaenols A-C. The brocaenols contain an unusual enolized oxepine lactone ring system that to the best of our knowledge is unprecedented in the literature. The structures were elucidated by using 2D-NMR methods including an INADEQUATE experiment. The absolute stereochemistry of brocaenol A was established by using a modified Mosher method. The taxonomy of the producing fungus was elucidated by using both morphological and rDNA sequence analysis.
