H. C. McKENZIE Plant Diseases Division, DSIR Private Bag, Auckland, New Zealand Abstract Three fungi, Entyloma fergussonii (Berk. et Br.) Plowr. (on Myosotis arvensis (L.) J. Hill), Mycovellosiella brachycarpa (H. Syd.) Deighton (on Solanum mauritianum Scop.), and Pseudopeziza geranii Rodway (on Geranium potentilloides L'Her. ex DC.) are recorded in New Zealand for the first time; 50 new host records are given for 32 other species. Two existing records, Mycosphaerella spissa H. Syd. on Coprosma robusta Raoul and Albugo candida (Pers.) O. Kuntze on Lepidium ruderale L. are deleted following redetermination of the hosts. Keywords new records; plant diseases; fungi; Entyloma fergussonii; Mycovellosiella brachycarpa; Pseudopeziza geranii; New Zealand INTRODUCTION Fifty three pathogen/host records are newly listed for New Zealand. Included amongst these combinations are 27 rusts, 5 smuts, 5 white rusts, 4 powdery mildews, and several leaf spots and blotches. The host plants, many of which are indigenous, are of little economic importance. Three fungi, Entyloma fergussonii (Berk. et Br.) Plowr., Mycovellosiella brachycarpa (H. Syd.) Deighton, and Pseudopeziza geranii Rodway were previously not known from New Zealand. Two existing records, Mycosphaerella spissa H. Syd. on Coprosma robusta Raoul and Albugo candida (Pers.) O. Kuntze on Lepidium ruderale L. are deleted following redetermination of the hosts. Specimens of all the fungi are housed in the Received 21 April 1987; revision 3 August 1987 Herbarium, Plant Diseases Division (PDD), Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Auckland, and for each specimen the PDD accession number is given. For the rust fungi, II indicates the presence of uredinia and III the presence of telia. Specimen localities are assigned to geographical areas as defined by Crosby et al. (1976). An asterisk indicates that the host is introduced. Fungi previously unrecorded in New Zealand Entyloma fergussonii (Berk. et Br.) Plowright, Monograph of the British Uredineae and Ustilagineae: 289, 1889 ~ Protomyces fergussonii Berkeley et Broome, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist., Ser. 4, 15: 36, 1875 on *Myosotis arvensis (L.) J. Hill Auckland, Mt Albert, 28.VI.1976, E. H. C. McKenzie (PDD 35290); same details, I.VI.1977 (PDD 36493); same details, 7 .X.1986 (PDD 52345). LEAF SMUT. Sori amphigenous, scattered, yellowish becoming brown, circular, up to 4 mm diam. Ustilospores pale brown, globose, ovoid to slightly irregular, 8 - 14 x 8 - 12 j.tm; spore wall smooth, evenly thickened, 0.5 -1( -1.5) j.tm thick. Conidia forming whitish growth on lesions, hyaline, filiform, straight or curved, 20 - 40( -70) x 1.5-2.5 j.tm. This fungus, originally described on Myosotis sp. from Scotland; is widespread in Europe on Myosotis spp. Mordue & Ainsworth (1984) and Vanky (1985) published photographs of the ustilospores. Mycovellosiella brachycarpa (H. Syd.) Deighton, Mycol. Pap. No. 137 : 8, 1974 ~ Cercospora brachycarpa H. Sydow, Annis mycol. 28 : 207, 1930 on *Solanum mauritianum Scop. McKenzie (PDD 52307). 362 New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, 1987, Vol. 30 LEAF BLOTCH. On upper surface forming a brown subcircular spot, up to 8 mm diam. On corresponding lower surface pale bluish-green mould growth becoming dark olivaceous to almost black with onset of sporulation. Pale secondary hyphae 1.5 - 2 /-tm wide ascending leaf hairs and giving rise to conidiophores. Conidiophores pale olivaceous, smooth, with conspicuous scars. Conidia pale olivaceous, smooth, subcylindrical, straight, catenate, chains frequently branched, 0 - 2 septate, 15-35 x 4-5.5 p.m. This fungus is known from South America, Africa, Mauritius, and India on several species of Solanum, including S. mauritianum. Deighton (1974) described and figured the fungus; some collections having slightly longer conidia with up to 3 septa. Pseudopeziza geranii Rodway, Pap. Proc. R. Soc. Tasm. 1924: 101, 1925 on *Geranium potentilloides L'Her. ex DC. Taupo, Turangakuma Reserve, 26.111.1984, E. H. C. McKenzie (PDD 50849). LEAF SPOT. Circular, reddish lesion with yeilow centre, becoming brown, up to 3 mm diam., most visible on upper surface of leaf. An erumpent, saucer-shaped apothecium up to 1 mm diam. arises from centre of lesion on upper surface of leaf. Asci cylindrical, 55 - 85 x 7 - 10 /-tm, 4-spored. Ascospores uniseriate, pale yellowish, ellipsoidal, biguttulate, 10-14 x 4-6 /-tm. The fungus was originally described on G. pilosum Willd. This rust was first recorded in New Zealand by Versluys (1977). Since then it has become very common, and is now known on 12 Oxalis spp. A. J. Healy (pers. comm.) has supplied some interesting observations on the rust. He noted that uredosori were epiphyllous on O. versicolor growing in Riccarton, Christchurch. Three Auckland specimens examined were also found to have epiphyllous pustules. This is in contrast to the other host species, and to published descriptions, McKenzie-New plant disease records in New Zealand where the uredosori are mainly hypophyllous. Although growing, in Riccarton, in close proximity to heavily infected plants, O. bowiei, O. hirta, and O. pes-caprae had only slight infection, whereas other species (0. corniculata L., O. deppei, O. exi/is A. Cunn., O. latifolia HBK, and O. tuberosa Mol.) were free of infection over a 2-year period. In December 1986, however, P. oxalidis was noted on two leaflets of O. deppei, although there was no evidence of rust on this plant in previous seasons. Elsewhere in New Zealand, P. oxalidis has been previously recorded on O. corniculata and O. lati/olia. Although the rust is of American origin, it has established in New Zealand on host species from South America, Mexico, and Africa. Puccinia tararua G. H. Cunn. (Dingley 1969) on Gentiana montana Forst. f. Wellington, Tararua Range, Dundas Ridge, 5.11.1985, P. R. Johnston (PDD 52057) II, III; same details, 10.11.1985 (PDD 52056) II. RUST. This endemic species was previously known on 4 Gentiana spp. in the high country, in the Auckland Islands, and in Campbell Island. Puccinia unciniarum Diet. et Neg. (Dingley 1969) on Uncinia angustifolia Hamlin Taupo, Mt Tongariro, Ketetahi Track, 21.III.1984, E. H. C. McKenzie (PDD 47869) II, III on Uncinia clavata (Kuk.) Hamlin Waikato, Mt Pirongia, 27.111.1984, E. H. C. McKenzie (PDD 45235) II on Uncinia laxiflora Petrie Taupo, Mt Tongariro, Ketetahi Track, 21.III.1984, E. H. C. This indigenous stem rust occurs on indigenous Scirpus spp. throughout the North Island, and in the northern South Island. Uromyces anthyllidis Schroet. (Dingley 1969) on *Lotus pedunculatus Cav.
