DNA fingerprinting and botanical study of Azadirachta indica A. Juss. (neem) family Meliaceae2013 •
In Egypt there are two different species that are commercially marketed under the same trade name of Neem: one is Azadirachta indica A. Juss., and the other is Melia azedarach L. In this paper, leaf morphological characters (e.g., lamina architecture, stomatography, petiole and blade micromorphology) of both taxa were described and illustrated to aid in the identification and differentiation between the two misidentified taxa. The obtained results concluded that leaf morpho-anatomical characters will not only provide criteria for their correct taxonomic authentication, but would also serve as future standard data for the quality assessment of the pharmaceutical preparation of botanical drugs.

Aromdee, C. and Sriubolmas, N. Essential oil of the flowers of Azadirachta indica (Meliaceae) Songklanakarin J. Sci. Technol., 2006, 28(1) : 115-119 Essential oil of the flowers of Azadirachta indica was obtained at 0.001% yield by steam distillation. It mainly consisted of α α α α α-cubebene (3.04%), copaene (7.03 %), humulene (3.7 %), δ δ δ δ δ-cadinene (9.43 %) and a number of sesquiterpenes. The oil also contained a series of unidentified organosulphur compounds. These organosulphur compounds were picked up by the S 34 isotope. The oil exhibited antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6633), Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) and Microsporum gypseum (Clinical isolated).

Two new foliicolous fungal taxa from Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal and Ponmudi forest areas of Kerala are described and illustrated. Meliola veebeehosagoudarii on Helicia excelsa is a new species while Asteridiella elaeocarpicola var. gadgilii on Elaeocarpus gadgili is described as a new variety. Both taxa are compared morphologically with similar taxa reported on members of Proteaceae and Elaeocarpaceae families, respectively.
