AGRAWAL Summary zyxwvutsrq zyxwvuts The isolation of Malbranchea pulchella has been reported from soil from a poultry farm. This represents the first record of its isolation from soil of India. Zusammenfassung Es wird iiber die Isolierung von Malbranchea pulchella aus dem Boden einer Gefliigelfarm berichtet. Das ist der erste Hjinweis auf den Nachweis dieses Pilzes aus indischem Boden. During an investigation on the occurrence of the geophilic dermatophytes and other related keratinophilic fungi in and around Sagar, M. P., India, a keratinophilic fungus Malbranchea pulchella Saccardo & Penzig was isolated from a soil sample collected from a poultry farm. Material and Methods Sterile Petri dishes were half-filled with soil sample which was then moistened with sterile distilled water. Small pieces of human hair were sterilized by autoclaving at 15 lbs pressure for 15 minutes. A large number of these hair were scattered over the soil and the plates were incubated at 28' C temperature. After 8-10 days the bits of mycelium from the infected hair were cultured or Sabouraud's dextrose agar with chloramphenicol and cycloheximide. Results and Discussion zyxwvu Colonies were first white and floccose becoming reddish brown, zonate and powdary on maturity. O n synthetic acid agar (KHoP04,1.0 g; MgSOd, 0.50 g; peptone 10.0 g ; dextrose 10.0 g, agar 15.0 g; distilled water 1 litre) it forms distinctive zones but on peptone 0.5 g; peptone, 5.0 g; dextrose, 10 g; agar dextrose agar (KHnP04,1 g; MgS04.7Hz0, 15.0 g, distilled water 1 litre) zones are less distinctive (Fig. 1). Microscopically rectangular thick-walled arthrospores formed in chains, alternating with thin walled sterile cells, were observed in abundance. Arthrospores measuring 2.8-8.4 p x 1.4-2.8 p. To the author's knowledge the prevalence of M.pulcbella in the soils of India is not known so far (Randhawa & Sandhu 1965, Garg 1966). Ajello & Padhye (1974) isolated Malbranchea sp. from disintegrated soil of Seymour, Galapagos Islands. The fungus showed amylolytic activity (Kushwaha & Agrawal, 1975). I t was also able to degrade human nails and feathers. Its keratinase activity has also been determined (Kushwaha, unpublished).
