The genus Cosmospora includes nectrioid fungi that grow on polypores and xylariaceous fungi. The collections growing on xylariaceous fungi have been identified recently as Cosmospora viliuscula. In this paper the phylogeny and taxonomy of C. viliuscula are investigated. A phylogeny was generated with maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods applied to a three-partition dataset (ITS, 28S, MCM7-RPB1-TUB2). Based on these results, we demonstrate that Cosmospora viliuscula represents a diverse species complex comprising more than 10 species. Seven new species are described, including three single-strain lineages, and the sexual states of C. arxii and C. khandalensis are described for the first time. The sexual states of these fungi tend to have a high degree of morphological homoplasy, making it difficult to differentiate among them based on morphological characters alone. However, the apparent host specificity of species in this complex aide in the diagnosis of these fungi. In...

Seven new genera, 26 new species, 10 new combinations, two epitypes, one new name, and 20 interesting new host and / or geographical records are introduced in this study. New genera are: Italiofungus (based on Italiofungus phillyreae) on leaves of Phillyrea latifolia (Italy); Neolamproconium (based on Neolamproconium silvestre) on branch of Tilia sp. (Ukraine); Neosorocybe (based on Neosorocybe pini) on trunk of Pinus sylvestris (Ukraine); Nothoseptoria (based on Nothoseptoria caraganae) on leaves of Caragana arborescens (Russia); Pruniphilomyces (based on Pruniphilomyces circumscissus) on Prunus cerasus (Russia); Vesiculozygosporium (based on Vesiculozygosporium echinosporum) on leaves of Muntingia calabura (Malaysia); Longiseptatispora (based on Longiseptatispora curvata) on leaves of Lonicera tatarica (Russia). New species are: Barrmaelia serenoae on leaf of Serenoa repens (USA); Chaetopsina gautengina on leaves of unidentified grass (South Africa); Chloridium pini on fallen trun...

Systematics of Ruscaceae/Convallariaceae: a combined morphological and molecular investigation2000 •
This paper discusses the intrafamilial systematics of Ruscaceae sensu lato by means of a combined molecular-morphological analysis. Ruscaceae sensu lato (including former Convallariaceae, Dracaenaceae and Nolinaceae, as well as Comospermum and Eriospermum) represent a well-supported clade in other molecular analyses and are further linked by the absence of phytomelan in the seed coat. Within this clade there is an unusual lack of sequence divergence for such a morphologically varied group of taxa, but the combined morphological-molecular analysis indicates some groupings: (1) Eriospermum, (2) Comospermum, (3) nolinoids (former Nolinaceae) plus Ophiopogon andLiriope (Ophiopogonae, excluding Peliosanthes), (4) dracaenoids (former Dracaenaceae), (5) Polygonatae and (6) a clade comprising Convallarieae (including Aspidistra) and the ruscoids (Ruscaceae sensu stricto) plusPeliosanthes . In the morphological analysis Peliosanthes is embedded in Convallarieae, and in the molecular analysis it is sister to all other Ruscaceae except Eriospermum: in neither case does it fall with Ophiopogon andLiriope (Ophiopogonae), with which it was traditionally placed. Peliosanthes has several characters in common with some Convallarieae, e.g. filaments fused into a column surrounding the gynoecium, and a thick, fleshy corona with the stigma more or less filling the narrow floral opening. On the other hand, there are also some notable differences, such as in karyotype, leaf anatomy, pollen morphology and nectaries. Since there is a considerable range of morphological variation in the taxon currently designated as Peliosanthes, more taxonomic work is needed to establish the monophyly of this genus before there can be confidence in its relationships within Ruscaceae sensu lato.
