Bulbostylis viridecarinata (De Wild.) Goetgh. is a widespread species occurring in many parts of Tropical Africa. Bulbostylis tisserantii Cherm. was synonymized with this species but based on numerous morphological differences this species should be re-instated at species rank. It is only known from three collections, all originating in the southern part of the Central African Republic. Descriptions and conservation status for both species are provided and their main distinguishing features are opposed and illustrated. Lectotypes are designated for Bulbostylis fasciculata Cherm. and Fimbristylis tisserantii Cherm.

Bulbostylis itremoensis (Abildgaardieae, Cyperaceae), a new sedge species from MadagascarSummaryAn endemic species of Bulbostylis (Abildgaardieae, Cyperaceae) from Madagascar is described as new to science. Bulbostylis itremoensis is only known from two localities: the Itremo and Isalo massifs in the province of Fianarantsoa. The species can be recognised by its habit with numerous crowded culms, leaves and thick, soft roots with an outer mycorrhizal layer. Its culm is hairy, angular with about 10 rounded longitudinal ridges without conspicuous surface cells. The leaf sheaths are light brown to straw-coloured with numerous longitudinal nerves, densely short-hairy on the nerves but with numerous flexuose whitish hairs at their oblique orifices. Its inflorescence is a dense hemispherical head of c. 15 crowded spikelets with many erect or spreading involucral bracts. Its glumes are ovate, densely scabrid of which medium-reddish brown with a prominent 1 – 3-nerved green midrib ending below the obtuse apex or excurrent into a short mucro. This species is described, illustrat...

The genera of Cyperaceae of MadagascarBackground and aims – The rise of DNA sequencing in systematics has brought more understanding of the Cyperaceae family worldwide. Through these studies, it has been possible to delineate major clades and classify its species into subfamilies, tribes, and genera. Today, we have a good understanding of the species diversity and geographic distribution of the genera. However, in the case of Madagascar, the only complete taxonomic treatment of Cyperaceae dates from 1937. Although recent monographs exist for some genera in Madagascar, the taxonomic treatment of the Cyperaceae of Madagascar has not been updated until now. Hence, the present work aims to produce an updated treatment at the generic level including descriptions and an identification key of all Cyperaceae genera in Madagascar. Material and methods – Books and scientific articles containing descriptions of the genera of Cyperaceae of Madagascar, and information on their ecology and distribution were consulted, as well as herb...

Pycreus rubidomontanus (Cyperaceae), a widespread but undescribed species from tropical West AfricaPycreus rubidomontanus is described as a new species. It is relatively widespread in tropical West Africa where it had been confused up to present with P. atrorubidus, a very rare endemic species from Zambia in south-central Africa that probably is known only from the type gathering. Differences between these and other similar species are discussed and the new species is copiously illustrated.

Hypolytrum goetghebeurii (Cyperaceae), a curious new species from miombo woodlands in the Democratic Republic of the CongoBackground – The genus Hypolytrum is studied during the preparation of the Cyperaceae treatment in Flore d’Afrique centrale. It is kept separate from Mapania and its African members have been divided amongst three sections. Methods – Herbarium material from BR and BRLU has been studied. A preliminary IUCN Red List assessment is performed according to the IUCN Guidelines and Criteria. Results – The new species Hypolytrum goetghebeurii is described from miombo woodlands in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It differs from other African species in the genus by forming thick tussocks, having narrow, rigid leaves and spicoids with three male flowers subtended by their floral bracts and a female flower with three stigmas. It occurs in seasonally dry areas with a regular fire regime and seems to be the only African species of that genus occupying such a dry habitat. It is named after the Cyperaceae specialist Prof. em. Dr. Paul Goetghebeur. Following the IUCN Red List criteria, the spec...

The macro-morphological variation and geographical distribution of six morphologically similar taxa from the Schoenoplectus corymbosus complex with distinctly muricated nutlets (viz Schoenoplectus confusus subsp. confusus var. confusus and var. rogersii, S. confusus subsp. natalitius, S. muricinux, S. muriculatus and Scirpus corymbosus var. junciformis) were thoroughly studied. It is concluded that all these taxa are ill-defined and that alleged distinctive traits are weak or widely overlap. We therefore suggest expanding the description of S. muricinux (the binomial which has nomenclatural priority) and reducing the other species and their infraspecific taxa to synonyms of it. “S. sp. A” of Flora of West Tropical Africa (Nigeria, where it is considered a naturalized introduction of man-made habitats) is shown to also belong to S. muricinux.
