Towards a catalogue and bibliography of the
freshwater Mollusca of Greece.
By
RUUD A. BANK
Hoofddorp.
Introduction.
In 2000, at the turn of the century, the 4-year project Fauna Europaea (hereafer FaEu) was established within the 5 th European framework program. The aim of this project is to provide an electronic
database focussing on the scientific names and known national/provincial distributions for the
> 100,000 (sub)species of terrestrial and limnic metazoans occurring in Europe. The backbone of the
FaEu database will be a list of accepted scientific names for the different (sub)species of animals recognised in Europe linked with information on important synonymy and national/provincial occurrence.
For the various metazoan groups, a Group Coordinator was elected. The author of this paper was
the Group Coordinator for the land- and freshwater Gastropoda. He prepared for FaEu an Excel database, a database that will become available on the World Wide Web (www) around October 2004. The
work coincided in part with the work that was (and is) carried out for CLECOM, an acronym that
stands for Check-List of the European Continental Mollusca [see FALKNER, G., BANK, R. A. & PROSCHWITZ, T. VON (2001): Check-list of the non-marine molluscan species-group taxa of the states of Nortern,
Atlantic and Central Europe. – Heldia, 4 (1/2): 1-76. München]. The nomenclature and classification
used by CLECOM is the basis for the FaEu project, in order to facilitate a more stable nomenclature.
The preparation of the FaEu database was a huge work, and will be discussed in a separate publication. Especially the lack of (critical) check-lists of the different (mostly Mediterranean) countries was a
complicating factor. An example was the lack of a check-list of the freshwater molluscs of Greece. In
this paper a catalog is provided that lists all the species-group and genus-group names that have been
applied to the freshwater molluscan fauna of Greece (mainland and its Archipelago). In addition to listing the names, the catalog provides information on distribution, type localities, deposition of type
material, and an extensive bibliography. The catalog is intended as a reference for future study of the
Greek malacofauna. It should be noted that the unique freshwater mollusc fauna of Greece is seriously
threatened, especially the endemic fauna inhabiting the old lakes.
The subdivision of Greece by the Fauna Europaea organization into geographical areas is as follows:
GR-AEG
GR-CYC
GR-DOD
GR-GRC
GR-KRI
Vóreion Aiyáion (North Aegean Islands) [IX]
Kikládes (Cyclades Islands) [VIII]
Dodekánisos (Dodecanese Islands) [X]
Greek mainland (including Andikíthira, Evia, the Ionian Islands,
Samothráki, the Northern Sporades, and Thassos) [I + II + III + IV + V + VI + VII]
Kriti (Crete) (including small adjacent islands like Gávdhos) [XI]
This subdivision partly coincides with that of the geographical subdivision of Greece as used in the
Fauna Graeciae series [see e. g. RIEDEL, A. (1992): Fauna Graeciae V. The Zonitidae (sensu lato) (Gastropoda, Pulmonata) of Greece. – Athens (Hellenic zoological Society): VIII + 194 pp; WIKTOR, A. (2001):
Fauna Graeciae VIII. The slugs of Greece (Arionidae, Milacidae, Limacidae, Agriolimacidae - Gastropoda,
51
Stylommatophora). – Irakleio (Natural History Museum of Crete): VIII + 241 pp.]. The Roman numbers
used in the Fauna Graeciae series are given in square brackets.
This paper is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of HANS D. BOETERS and CLAUS MEIER-BROOK. I have
met them both more than 25 years ago. My early contact with them stimulated me to continue with the
study of freshwater molluscs, despite the fact that my main interest in these days were the land snails.
Although both malacologists spend their lives mostly on freshwater molluscs, at least one of them
became affected by land snails as well, as wittnessed by his co-authorship of a series of Aciculidae taxa.
A new world was opened to me when BOETERS gave me some insight in the field of patents. At these
early days I didn't consider it likely that I would once write patents myself. It turned out to be different.

Primary citations of the genus-group taxa mentioned under
Moitessieriidae, Hydrobiidae and Pyrgulidae.
In this section, the original reference is given for each genus-group name mentioned in the check-list
under the families Moitessieriidae, Hydrobiidae and Pyrgulidae. Furthermore, type species of available
genus-group names are given with their correct original generic combination, authorship, date and
spelling, even if this differs from their citation in the fixation of the species as the type. The method of
designation is given as follows: by monotypy, by original designation, by subsequent designation.
Where the type species was subsequently designated, the authority for that designation is given.

Turcorientalia RADOMAN 1973, Posebn. Izd. prirodn. Muz. Beogradu, 32: 8 [as Turcorientalia], 22 [as
Turkorientalia]. Species typica (by monotypy): Turkorientalia anatolica RADOMAN 1973. Notes: RADOMAN
(1973) erected for the taxon anatolica RADOMAN 1973 a new genus, that he spelled as Turcorientalia (: 8)
and Turkorientalia (: 22). The genus name is validly introduced because it is in agreement with ICZN
Article 13.4 (it is a combined description of a new nominal genus and a single included nominal species). SCHÜTT (1980: 126-127) selected the name Turcorientalia as the correct original spelling. He is therefore the First Reviser in the sense of ICZN Article 24.2.3 ("If a name is spelled in more than one way in
the original work, the first author to have cited them together and to have selected one spelling as correct is the First Reviser. The selected spelling ..... is thereby fixed as the correct original spelling; any
other spelling is incorrect (and therefore unavailable [Art. 32.4]"). SCHÜTT overlooked that Turcorientalia
was validly introduced by RADOMAN and claimed authorship over Turcorientalia, which cannot be the
acknowledged. He also incorrectly selected another type species, namely Paludina byzanthina KÜSTER.
The diagnosis is also incorrect: the original type species (anatolica) has two seminal receptacles, whereas
in the diagnosis of Schütt only one receptaculum seminis is mentioned. A recent synonym of Turcorientalia RADOMAN 1973 is Pavleradomania P. REISCHÜTZ 1988; the latter author also overlooked ICZN Art.
13.4. It should be stressed that the Greek taxa mentioned by SCHÜTT as Turcorientalia do not belong to
that genus; instead, we consider them as belonging to Belgrandiella, as they seem to be anatomically
identical to the type species of Belgrandiella (SCHÜTT, 1980: 127 "Genitalien ähnlich Belgrandiella").
Primary citations of the species-group taxa

In this section the primary citations are given only for the species-group taxa (1) that have been
described from Greece, as well as (2) taxa that show a distribution that is essentially limited to the Bal-

locality is quoted as originally published. If a valid lectotype designation has been made, only the lectotype locality is given. Information on the whereabouts of type material is included when published
records could be traced. The following museum acronyms were used:

status: Trichonia kephalovrissonia RADOMAN 1973. Notes: SCHÜTT (1980: 117) considers Trichonia kephalovrissonia RADOMAN 1973 a synonym of Heleobia steindachneri. This cannot be the case, as the anatomy
of a type specimen of T. kephalovrissonia (described by RADOMAN 1983: 82, fig. 43) is completely different from that of H. steindachneri (described by SCHÜTT 1980: fig. 1). The type species of Trichonia RADOMAN 1973 happens to be kephalovrissonia. However, the name Trichonia RADOMAN 1973 is not an available name. SCHÜTT (1980: 120) made the epithet Trichonia available under his name, but he selected
Trichonia trichonica RADOMAN 1983 as the type species, not Trichonia kephalovrissonia RADOMAN 1973.
