RESUMEN
ABSTRACT
causales Phyllachora maydis Maubl., Monographella maydis Müller

more than one hundred million Mexicans,
and over 2 000 000 ha of this grain are
sown annually. Humidity and temperature favor the
development of leaf blights, as is the case of tar spot

with high relative humidity, located between 1300 and

lesions, that are stromatic of smooth and shiny
appearance, oval to circular in shape, with 0.5 to 2.0
mm diameter and forming striae of up to 10 mm in
length (Parbery, 1967; Hamlin, 1999). A second fungus
associated with the disease is Monographella maydis
Müller & Samuels, which provokes lesions around those
produced by P. maydis. At first an elliptic shaped halo
is observed, light green and 1-4 mm in size, which
later becomes necrotic and provokes the symptom
known as fish eye. In young lesions it is common to
find Microdochium sp, anamorph of Monographella
maydis. In addition, Coniothyrium phyllachorae Maubl.
can be observed in necrotic tissue (Müller and Samuels,
1984), which confers a slightly rough texture to the
damaged tissue.
Under favorable environmental conditions, various
of these species act sinergetically, causing the tar spot
complex syndrome (TSC). The foliage can become
blighted in less than eight days, due to coalescence of
lesions induced by the different fungi and attributed to
the production of a toxin. Additional factors that favor
the disease are: high humidity in the environment (10
to 20 cloudy days in the month), high levels of
nitrogenized fertilization, two cycles of maize per year,
susceptible genotypes, low luminosity, age of high
vulnerability of the host, virulence of the pathogens
involved and (Hock et al., 1989).
Samplings made between 1985 and 1988 in
México revealed high incidence and severe damage
to maize in Jalisco, Michoacán, Hidalgo, Veracruz,
Oaxaca and Chiapas, which affected approximately
500 000 ha of the crop and caused losses of as much
as 50 % in infections prior to flowering (Hock et
al., 1989).
From 2001 to 2005, approximately 40% of
3100 ha of maize established in the valley of
Mochitlán, Guerrero, were affected by the disease,
with severe losses in grain yield; in 2005, total loss
was reported in 600 ha in the municipality of Tixtla,
Guerrero, and for 2007, the disease appeared in more
than 10 municipalities of Guerrero (González et al.,
2008).
With respect to the management of the disease,
Ceballos and Deutsch (1992) found resistance to tar
spot attributable to a dominant gene. In addition,
chemical control with preventative or curative sprayings
have been effective (Bajet et al., 1994).
Because of the severe damages to maize production
in the state of Guerrero, the objective of the present
study was to determine the local etiology of tar spot
complex, evaluate tolerance in maize genotypes adapted
to the region and to determine the effectiveness of
fungicides for controlling the disease.

MATERIALES
Y
cultivo Papa Dextrosa Agar (PDA) acidificado.
36 h.
The work was carried out in the Valley of Mochitlán, Guerrero,
(17° 10’ and 17° 30’ N and 99° 35’ and 99° 14’ W). The climate is
warm subhumid, with mean annual temperature and rainfall of 22
°C and 1100 mm. The orography is integrated by accidented (60%),
semilevel (25 %) and level (15 %) zones, where maize is the principal
crop (INEGI, 2002).
With information of farmers and technicians, on September 22
of 2002, 10 sampling sites were located and visited; four plots of
maize sown with A-7573 (Asgrow), 3 with DK-2002, one with DK880 (Dekalb) and two with VS-535 (INIFAP), with more than 3 km
distance between plots. Each plot was walked in zig-zag and every
10 m the leaf that envelops the ear was collected, obtaining 20
samples per site. The collected samples were washed with distilled
water and kept in refrigeration at 4 °C until analysis.
Analysis of diseased material and pathogenicity tests
The diseased material was carefully examined with a stereoscopic
microscope (4X), and manual sections were made from the stromatic
structures and they were placed in KOH 3 % for 3 min, then mounted
on slides with lactophenol added with cotton blue and observed with
a light microscope. Diseased tissue was disinfested for 60 s in sodium
hypochlorite 3 %, then rinsed five times in distilled water and dried
in absorbant paper. Tissue fragments from the edge of young lesions
were placed in Petri dishes with acidified Potato Dextrose Agar
(PDA) culture medium. Tools, culture medium and space that were
used were sterilized by conventional methods (Tuite, 1969). The
dishes were incubated at 22 °C and the fungi that grew were purified
by hypha point and monosporic cultures. Additionally, part of the
tissue disinfested in sodium hypochlorite was placed in Petri dishes
in a humid chamber to induce sporulation.
The pathogenicity tests were conducted in a greenhouse equiped
with a thermostat: humidity over 70 %, maximum temperatures of
30 and 18±3 °C for day and night. Perithecia of P. maydis were
placed in a film of distilled water on a concave slide, then placed in
a humid chamber for 14 h. Next, it was applied on the foliar lamina
of maize shoots, using a fine hair brush 43 d after sowing (Parbery,
1963). Individual suspensions of the cultures of Microdochium and
Coniothyrium in PDA, were prepared at a concentration of 3×104
conidia mL−1, they were leaf sprayed individually and mixed (2 mL
each) on six plants of VS535 (with high susceptibility observed in
the field) at the stage of six leaves and covered with plastic bags
during 36 h.
Evaluation of germplasm by tolerance
The tolerance to the pathogens associated with CMA was
evaluated in 76 hybrids product of the crosses between 19 elite
endogamic lines of the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales
and Agropecuarias-Iguala (INIFAP-Iguala) and H-513, H-H-516 and

Remaco 32 and 38 adapted for the humid tropic, dry and subtropic.
The 76 experimental hybrids plus five commercial hybrids were
evaluated in a 9×9 triple lattice experimental design. The
experiment was carried out in the plot of a farmer from Mochitlán,
Guerrero.
Another test consisted of 25 cultivars (five commercial cultivars,
six new synthetic cultivars, two tolerant to drought, five of proteic
quality, one tropical population, one subtropical population and five
cultivars adapted to mountains), using a 5×5 triple lattice experimental
design. The experimental plot consisted of a single row 6.0 m in
length, 0.9 m of separation between rows, two plants every 0.5 m
and three replicates. The sowing was made on June 28 of 2002.
The tolerance level of each hybrid and cultivar to the organisms
associated with CMA was measured in the field with the scale
described in Table 1, in epiphytes that occurred naturally. The first
evaluation was made at the onset of flowering, 60 d after sowing
(das) and the second in the stage of doughy grain (95 das).
Severity of additive damage from the fungi involved, was
expressed as percentage of the total damaged area of three leaves;
leaf enveloping the ear and the two leaves immediately below it.
During harvest, the number of ears was recorded with and without
indirect damage from the disease, which based on the experience of
farmers and investigators, is recognized by the dehydrated appearance
of the grains and the weight loss of the ears. The grain yield was
adjusted to 15% of moisture and was expressed in t ha−1.
Protection with fungicides
On the same date of sowing, a plot was established with seed of
the synthetic variety VS-353, of free pollination and wide acceptance
for the size of the ear, semihard texture and white color of the grain
(Gómez et al., 1993). The experimental plot was of ten rows of
10 m in length, with a separation between rows of 0.9 m and 0.5 m
between mounds. Each mound had two plants. Four plots formed
one block. For the number of treatments and unidirectional slope of
the terrain, the experimental design was of randomized blocks with
three replicates. The infection occurred naturally.
semillas mejoradas, emplean maquinaria agrícola o tracción animal, aplican insecticidas en el control de plagas de la raíz y follaje, usan herbicidas y fertilizantes;
Monographella maydis y Coniothyrium phyllachorae
a
Microdochium
maydis,
anamorfo
de
Monographella maydis.
The active ingredients and doses (kg of i.a. ha−1) evaluated
were as follows: benomyl (Benlate®) 50 PH, 0.200; copper oxychloride
(Oximet®, 59PH), 0.350; pentahydrated copper sulphate (Comet®,
25.5 PH), 0.250, and control (without fungicide). Each product was
suspended in water containing 0.02 % Tween 80 (sodium monoleate).
The spraying was made with a manually operated portable pump.
The first application was made in preflowering (60 das), and the
next was made during flowering (75 das).
The protection level from the application of fungicides was
evaluated in 10 plants of five central rows of the plot, similar to the
case described above and according to the scale of Table 1. Two
evaluations were made, one prior to the second application of the
fungicides (75 das) and the next in the doughy stage of the grain,
approximately 95 das (Bajet et al., 1994).
Plant height (m) was recorded at harvest, height at the insertion
of the ear (m), number of ears in the experimental plot with and
without damage from the disease and grain yield (kg). The grain
weight was adjusted to 15 % of moisture and to express it as
commercial yield (t ha−1), 20 % of the experimental yield was
eliminated. The economic analysis was made with the methodology
proposed by CIMMYT (1988).
RESULTS
AND
DISCUSSION
Characterization of the area and collection
of the diseased material
With the field valuation and interview of maize
producers of the valley of Mochitlán, Guerrero, it was
estimated that approximately 90 % of the producers
use improved seeds, use agricultural machinery or
animal traction, apply insecticides in the control of
pests of root and foliage, and use herbicides and
fertilizers; they also prefer varieties of free pollination
and medium sized hybrids acceptable for the
commercialization of ear of a good size, sweet grain
and little fiber. This agricultural area is located 10 km
from the city of Chilpancingo and 100 km from the
port of Acapulco, a strategic location taken advantage
of by the producers to commercialize their product. In
all of the sites visited, the maize leaves, even those
enveloping the ear, presented dark raised spots, an
elyptical shaped halo, light green color, resembling a
fish eye; typical symptoms associated with CMA.
Analysis of diseased material
In the maize samples with symptoms of tar spot,
structures were observed corresponding to the fungi
Phyllachora maydis (Parbery, 1967), Monographella
maydis and Coniothyrium phyllachorae Müller and
Samuels (1984). These pathogens were previously
reported by Hock et al. (1995) causing CMA in other
regions of México.

rugoso.

In samples from the municipalities of Teloloapan

associated with a high incidence of Coniothyrium

the diseased surface of the leaf was of rough appearance.
Evaluation of germplasm
All of the materials evaluated manifested the disease
in 100 % incidence, but with different severity (Table

mainly due to the tolerance level of the materials, given
that there was homogeneity in the date of sowing,
fertilization, cultural tasks, agrochemicals applied and

management. Of the 81 hybrids, only three (H513×CML47, HEIi×H-H-513, H-513×CM374) were
grouped in class 1 of the scale. Statistically, these three
genotypes formed part of the 22 hybrids with highest
tolerance. This result indicated sufficient inoculum in
the site and discarded the possibility of escape from
the infection. Consequently, the attributes of tolerance
were consistent in the tester H-513 (double cross
obtained in INIFAP-campo Cotaxtla, Veracruz and
which adapts to environmental conditions of high
humidity), as genotypes with its descendence represented
77 % of the 22 best genotypes with tolerance to
pathogens of the tar spot complex.
In yield, the experimental hybrids RC038×HEI and
H-513×ST-549 were outstanding with 8.2 and 8.1 t
ha−1 at a level of 19.89 and 13.18 % of severity.
These materials showed vigor, without flattening, good
size ears and good cover.
The varieties fluctuated from moderate to very
susceptible (class 3 to 5 on the scale), but the productive
behavior was relevant, given that 72% of these
surpassed 4.0 t ha−1 of grain. Some even had high
yield, such as Sintético Dialélico 6, Sintético Dialélico
5 and VS-535 (Control) with 7.089, 6.380 and 6.248 t
ha−1 (Table 3).
The correlation severity of CMA with grain yield
(p≤0.05) was negative and with relatively low value

(R=−0.626). Developing the model y=a+bx, it was
obtained that for each 8 % of increment in the severity
of the disease, the yield decreased 0.626 t ha−1. In
addition, the correlation severity with number of
damaged ears (p≤0.05) was positive but also with a
low value R=0.51).
Protection with fungicides
The fungicides had a different effect on CMA (Table
4), the copper based products provoked toxicity and
were surpassed by the control in 15.2 and 19.4 % in
grain yield. Benomyl demonstrated excellent control of
CMA, and registered the lowest percentage in damaged
ears (6.2%) and surpassed the control 55.1 % in yield.
For the economic analysis, ears of commercial
quality were counted in 100 plants of each replicate.
The quality parameter was highest in Benomyl (80 %)
followed by the control (64 %), copper oxychloride
(52 %) and copper pentahydrate (49 %). The sale price
in dollars was $7.27 per twelve dozen.
When commercializing grain production, the utility
was US $ 64.84 in the control and US $ 359.96 with
the application of benomyl, utility 5.4 times higher
with the application of benomyl. When the production
of ears was commercialized, utility was US $ 359.96
in the control and US $ 784.32 in the treatment with
benomyl, that is, 2.2 times higher.
