I live alone and take very good care of my possessions, it's still in like new condition. Therefore I have not encountered any broken or failed parts. I couldn't speak for a busy family with children or someone that would handle it roughly. The material isn't very strong so it would be more prone to have problems in those conditions. The spring loaded lid on the CD player is rather flimsy and could break if it isn't closed carefully. The function buttons on the top of the unit for CD, SD/USB control are prone to wear and can become stubborn. I've found that pressing the buttons carefully but firmly, and in the right spot should resolve that when it happens. The carry handle feels sturdy.
As this unit has no way to adjust sound characteristics (bass, treble, etc) and 3" "paper" full range speakers, one can't expect room shaking sound. However, for what it is, the sound is acceptable. The volume will get exceptionally loud and doesn't seem to loose much clarity. The CD player works very well and usually handles worn and moderately scratched discs smoothly. Will play both standard audio CDs and mp3 CDs. The AM/FM tuner brings in stations very well. Usually these cheaper radios have weak tuners, surprisingly this one doesn't have that issue. There is a nice telescopic FM antenna on the rear behind the handle which can easily be tucked away. The SD/USB reader works well. I have found that it will sometimes play some files or folders out of order. Making sure the mp3 and wma files are properly tagged and labeled will usually correct the problem. The 3.5mm Auxiliary input automatically powers up the boombox when connected to a device, sound output is clear. This model does not have a headphone jack. You have two power options; AC 120V or 8 "C" alkaline batteries. Note that the batteries will add some weight. Using the USB/SD or Aux input will extend the battery life. Using the CD player or having the volume at high levels for extended periods of time will quickly drain the power though. For the SD/USB and CD player modes, a two digit backlit LCD display will show folder and track numbers, no text information though.
All in all this is a great bargain for the price point.
UPDATE: I've been using this product daily, I just sat and tested the USB port and the SD port while the USB port didn't work, I have to say it's me not the radio's fault I will try it again. I use a mac not windblows for all my computer needs, and never having used a microsloth machine I forget that sometimes things need microsloth formatting. So it didn't seem to read my USB stick, but I think it's the format. the SD card works great, I copied a bunch of music to my camera's SD card and popped it in the player and it worked fine. I will reformat the USB stick with windopes and try it again. over all though I am still not disappointed since it does everything I want it to do anyways. the SD and USB are bonus's to me. I still will keep it at five stars more after retrying the USB stick.
It was confusing at first to operate because the print on the buttons is TINY. And close together.
But I figured it out.
The button on left side (on top of player) selects the playing options, Radio, Off or CD/USB.
The buttons in front:
"Skip -"allows you to go back one song at a time.
"Skip +"allows you to go forward one song at a time.
"Stop" lets you stop where you are and it stays at that point in song.
"Folders" This lets you select Folders on USB for example. Say you have a folder for each different artist or album.
Click on this and it advances to the next folder.
In the LED field, you'll see F01 or F02 for example, instead of the name of the folder.
So the buttons could have been labeled better I think but for the money this is a nice player. My friend is pleased and she likes to play cds, loves to listen to the radio, and now has tons of stuff to listen to from the USB.
The speakers are average, what do you expect for 3 " speakers. If you want better I'd say you probably would need to spend about twice the money. For what we needed it for this boombox is good enough.
