Backs against the wall...

Galatea. The Mercenary's Star. Even the most down on their luck units can find work here. Leading the newly-formed Gray Death Legion has been challenging for Grayson Death Carlyle, so when a job comes their way, he’s only too happy to take it. The mission: train the local resistance on the planet Verthandi to resist their Draconis Combine masters.

But things do not go well almost from the moment the Legion arrives. Trapped on Verthandi and facing a superior force and a fractured populace, the men and women of the Legion find themselves in a situation that makes the campaign on Trellwan look like a walk in the park. And Grayson quickly learns that repeating his past successes may not be so easy this time…

I’ve always enjoyed reading about the GDL and their characters and it was good to see them all together again. The extra bits of science thrown in was a nice addition and the alien comment was great

In line with every Catalyst Game Labs novel to date. The editing seemed to be non existent in the first two thirds of the book. Missing words, same word twice and sentence structure issues. The editing is really a slap in the face to another good story written very well by the author. I did feel like Grayson was made out to be stereotypical super good guy. Always one step ahead of everyone else. He was kind of annoying. Now I do not remember how the character was in older novels but maybe this is how he is supposed to be. If so then it is spot on in this book. It is a quick action packed read. If not for the editing I would have given it a five star review because the author is good at what he does.

Started off a little slow but less than a third of the way through I couldn’t put it down. Read more than half of it in one day.

If you haven’t read any of the old battletech books you are in for a treat. This book and its predecessor (decision at thunder rift) are character driven stories with drama and strategy that bring a sci-if universe populated with gigantic war robots to life in a way that is both seemingly believable and plausible. The mechs are realistically balanced against one another, so it doesn’t have the same issues as other franchises where one robot dominates all the others for no better reason then the story wouldn’t move forward without it. Overall the disruptions of the battles the most fun part to read .

Just a note whatever scanner to text program they used to digitize this book couldn’t always tell the difference between a “th” and an “m” so there is some strange sentences and words at times, I hope they fixe this in the kindle version soon.

Loved this whole series when it was published originally. I remember frustration waiting for the next instalment back in the day. I found it very easy to get invested in the characters and generally a fun read. It was just as pleasurable the second time through. Just had to get it for my e reader when it was released. In my opinion this book comes from the classic age of Battletech (pre Clans) and I really hope more of these are made available for fans.

I have now listened to both the first and second book in this series and they are both good enough for what they are. I really like the setting having been a fan of Battletech since the mid 1980s but don't fool yourself, the character writing is not as strong as you would hope. Depictions of battles and such are great but every female character is a hot mess of emotional baggage. There is high school romance level nonsense going on with even the female mechwarrior being a tortured mess of emotions in ways no male characters are depicted as behaving. Part of the issue is EVERY female character is an emotional mess.

Poor characterization really bothers me. This problem was apparent in the first book, it is far more obvious in this one. I do not know if I want to go for the third in the series to have more of the same.

This book has all the right feels. It has some continuity errors but I don't think that's worth a bad review considering all the things this book gets right. Storyline and world building in this one are great and it brings back all the old school battletech feel, as well as a certain sci fi feel that modern battletech stories seem to lack.

Continues the grey death saga in one of the most interesting Battletech eras - well paced, good plot and good character development.

A decent read though I'd wonder just how effective a Mechs weapons would be at busting through a pressure bulkhead. Or a Marauder engaging in "delecate" hand to hand still a good read
