The original version of Ecco the Dolphin was an impressive display of the Sega Genesis' graphical capabilities. It had detailed and varied environments with an original story. Unfortunately it was a struggle to play through. The control was clunky and the music was grating. Fortunately the Sega CD received an updated version of the game.

Ecco CD uses the capabilities of the Sega CD to upgrade the soundtrack, add levels, and improve gameplay elements. The new soundtrack was composed by Spencer Nilson, the artist behind the US soundtrack of Sonic CD and The Amazing Spider-Man Vs. The Kingpin. The music is incredibly effective and atmospheric catering to the style of each level. In fact, the music was so well done, Sega released an album called Ecco: The Songs of Time featuring a combination of tracks from Ecco CD and from the soundtrack of the Sega CD version of it's sequel, Ecco: The Tides of Time, also composed by Nilson.
The game also features seven new levels which use art assets from The Tides of Time. These are welcome additions that allow you to get the most out of your experience. But along with these levels comes the most important addition to Ecco. An addition that almost completely changes the experience... There are now Checkpoints!
Any veteran of the first Ecco games knows the pain and suffering of getting to the very end of a level and dying only to be put at the very start of that long trial. Ecco CD answers this problem by giving you a check point after every Key Glyph is cleared, large crystals that block your progress at various points in the levels. After clearing one, dying gives you the opportunity to continue from that point or restart the level entirely. This makes the game far more bearable. This alone would make this the preferred version, but all these features together make a solid package that would grace any Sega collection.

Ecco The Dolphin is great. I mean this is like the only dolphin game that you could get. There are other titles of Ecco though. I found that this is one of the only Sega games that has survived throughout the years. A hint that it is great.

Now the graphics for such an old game such as this is fantastic. It's not that great, but still they're pretty darn good. The dolphins look pretty much alike though, so you don't feel like the oddball out.

The sonar map that you get is useful sometimes, but most of the time it is too inaccurate. In some areas it says that there is an empty space, but when I get there it's the sea floor. This really needs to be improved.

The music throughout the game is great at first, but it's the same music throughout the game. It does not capture the feel of some levels. Some pest that visits my house a lot said that it was gothic. It's very fun to listen to if you want some calm, serene music. And you can turn the volume up and annoy people with it if you want.

The air meter dwindles at a frightening speed. So I have to come up every thirty seconds or so maybe. I drown a lot because of how fast it goes down. That means you have to jump out of the water a lot. Thankfully you can swim frightfully fast.

The difficulty is maddening! I die the very second I touch a stinkin' alien. I think you have this sort of ability to fly and your sonar becomes damaging. That's very useful when it comes to the matter of aliens, 'cause you can't charge them.

It's very difficult for me to control Ecco because sometimes you just have to press where you want to go and other times you have to go in a circle to get there. He sometimes won't go where you want to. This I found very annoying.

All in all I say that you get some passwords and hook the win with them. It will take you a very long time even with passwords to beat it. I'd say overall it's worth four stars.

As the headline suggests, this game is a masterpiece. This was one of the very first PC/video games I ever played, and I say so with great nostalgia and gratitude.

From it's unique story line, to the beautiful graphics, to the innovative game play, to the haunting soundtrack- everything about this game is a work of art.

The game isn't an easy-going walk in the park, and is definitely not for those that are into basic side scrollers! It's challenge level is note-worthy, and can even be frustrating at times, but not so much so, that it is impossible, or unenjoyable, and once you figure out a puzzle it throws at you, or beat a trial placed in your way, you feel really accomplished and satisfied, but trust me, you will lose several times before you beat a level. The game, however is gracious in terms of continues- you have an infinite number of them, so you can keep trying until you decide when to turn in for the day, and it offers passwords at the beginning of each level, so if you take the time to write a password down, you have the option to turn the game off and whenever you want to return to that specific level you can, so long as you type the password in before you begin playing.

A really unique, and fun game, with a high replay value. If you're searching for something different, with a sense of challenge, and is highly immersive then I highly recommend this game.

(And, just a small tip from a seasoned player of this game series)
The super Nintendo/Sega versions soundtracks, while adequate, are not the same as the soundtrack made for the compact disc versions, so if you want the full experience, I would recommend purchasing the versions intended for the PC, or any of the Sega CD systems. The music on those are far superior, and really add to the experience of this game.
