If you liked the original F.E.A.R., you will probably like this expansion pack a lot. You don't have to own or have played the original to enjoy it though. It's completely stand alone but it does help to have some background in the story. I played the original way after it's release and I'm playing this even farther from it's release but both games have a great oldschool FPS feel and entertaining game play. If you don't like slightly dated games then stay away but if you still enjoy going back to last gen games then it's worth buying, especially at the very low price it's offered for now. It never won any awards that I know of but it's addictive and a great way to burn a few hours.
I rented this game by accident at BlockBuster when trying to rent the original FEAR but that was fine since this game is Awesome. I play a ton of videogames, mostly for the 360 and I have to say that the FEAR series is one of the best. It has a Halo FPS type feel but also incorperates some Silent Hill horror while balancing an intriguing story. The FEAR Files expansion adds some multiplayer content and two new campaigns. I have to admit I didn't do much with the online multiplayer but the story mode was amazing. I stayed up all night the first night I rented it and beat both the story modes.
After a few months I purchased the game off Amazon so I could knock out some more achievements and replay the stories.
Graphics 7/10 Not the best looking game for the 360 by far, but considering its age I can't be too disappointed.
Controls 9/10 Good responsive button layout for an FPS.
Story 10/10 Even as an expansion the stories stand alone and provide a cool look into the FEAR world. Since this was my first exposure to the series that has to say something!
Replayability 8/10 I find myself picking this one up off the shelf every couple of months to run through it again. Good game.
Achievements 8/10 Has a handful of online achievements which are pretty much impossible now. The story mode achievements are great though.
Overall 9/10 Worth the buy especially with the prices you can get here on Amazon!
FEAR is inarguably one of the best games in 2006. With its complex and detailed story proves a new group of game fans to appreciate this great first-person shooting game. The add-on pack, what can I say, just an upper level of fun add to the original game.
No case as shown in the product photo and the disc was very scratched up to where the Xbox will not install the game and, further more, it freezes up and forces you to quit to the home screen while playing without installing it to the hard drive.
Extraction Point was a lot of fun and just as good as the base game, along with the instant action missions, but Perseus Mandate was really bad and felt dated. I would still recommend buying F.E.A.R Files just for the good things I mentioned.
This game is more like a prototype sequel to the first game than additional content. It has 2 full-length campaigns which are each as long in duration as either FEAR 1 or 2. Some of the storyline hints dropped in 2 are actually referenced here before the second game came out. So, if you are a fan of Alma's ongoing horror story, you absolutely should invest in this game. I found some of the playthrough more enjoyable than the first game but not as as much as 2. To be honest, I get a little tired of rinse and repeat gameplay where you go from one dreary location to another (creepy deserted office, creepy sewer, creepy lab, creepy deserted tenement slums) fighting the same a-holes who basically swallow bullets and overwhelm you thrown in with the occasional jump-scare, but there's something to be said for the overall ambience of this series which has managed to present something unique to the survival horror game genre. I think it actually out-Resident Evils Resident Evil in some regards. In short, this is a slick, fast-paced version of a John Carpenter movie from the 80's with way more action spliced with new-style J-horror like Ringu or Akira. So if you've never played any of these games and any of those things interest you, you could pick up this game as a standalone or anything after number 1 (which is annoying in retrospect after playing the 3 others)and you'll likely have a good time.
