Nirvana may have been the biggest thing in the music world in the early '90s, but the trio maintained an uncommon devotion to core fans who knew them when they were still sleeping in a van. Fending off the adoration of punk-rock dabblers in the media and their audience while simultaneously welcoming stalwart underground-music supporters, Kurt Cobain did things on his own terms--until it all came crashing down. A decade after Cobain's 1994 suicide and the band's demise, With the Lights Out remains true to the ethos that defined the band and the alt-rock revolution that rose and fell with them.

Eschewing the standard hits-sprinkled-with-rarities mix, this lovingly compiled three-CD, one-DVD collection is made up almost entirely of previously unreleased selections. The handful of previously heard tracks are obscurities along the lines of the group's cover of "Here She Comes Now," recorded for a 1990 indie-rock tribute to the Velvet Underground. But it's not the B-sides and compilation oddities that define this idiosyncratic set; rather, its spirit is captured in the bedroom demos, radio performances, and sloppy amateur video recordings that catch Cobain and cohorts developing from just another punk- and metal-inspired bunch of grunge rockers pounding away in the bass player's mom's living room into a band that defined an era. --Steven Stolder

This is a great way to see how Nirvana evolved over the years and a great way to get a best of set. This album contains demos, acoustic versions and raw live versions of pretty much every one of your favorite songs. I'm amazed at just how much stuff is packed into this collection from recordings at Kurt's home to early live shows to versions of the songs that show them as works in progress.

The DVD included in the set is worth the money alone. It has gems like performances in small Seattle coffee shops, a set that looks like it was played in one of the band member's homes and the first time Dave Grohl appeared in a show as the drummer for the band.

Some of the demos are so good that I actually prefer them to the album versions of the songs. The live versions both on the CDs and DVD are a real treat since I never had a chance to see the band live. This set was entirely worth the money and I'm glad I was able to experience it.

After owning all of Nirvana's albums, and Sliver, I decided it was finally time to buy this box set so I could finally own perhaps my favorite Nirvana song, Sappy.
I have to give it 5 stars, because there are many gems in this collection, but there are also many songs that are hard to listen to. I wouldn't recommend this box set to anyone but a diehard Nirvana fan, because it's very hard to just listen through a CD without skipping a few songs. However, stellar tracks such as Sappy and the demo of Polly, which is quite a bit heavier than the one on Nevermind, make the box set worth it. I suppose some fans may appreciate the more raw songs in this collection, and if so, then I'd especially recommend this collection.
It also comes in a nice large box with the shiny photo, making it perfect for any Nirvana fan's collection.

The story, the songs, we all know them very well. But what we don't know is what happened behind them all. With The Lights Out tells the behind the scenes story of all of Nirvana's most famous tracks as well as some hidden gems. You are able to hear the raw emotions spilled over the tapes by Kurt as well as the true power of Dave's drumming. All this is helped along by Krist Novaselic's bass rifts and Pat Smears underlying guitar melodies. You will now truly know what it took to make these songs as unique as they are. All this could not have been done without the help of producer Butch Vig which is evident on his version of Smells Like Teen Spirit! This box set is recommended for any true Nirvana fan looking to feel as if they were in the studio with Kurt, Dave, Krist, Pat and Butch the days when these tracks were recorded!

With The Lights Out is an amazing and honest look of Nirvana. This 3 disc set captures Nirvana from beginning to end.

If you are new to Nirvana, I reccomend purchasing this at a later date. If you are familar with the band and their music, knowing a handful of facts about their history and meanings behind the songs, this box set should deffinately be purchased. You'll be holding something you could have only dreamnt of in your hands.

Quite a few songs on the cd's aren't in great audio sounding shape due to what was used to record them. But even so, it shows through some of Nirvana's best work. It's almost as if you're sitting there beside Kurt Cobain singing his haunting rendition of "Do Re Mi" on disc 3. It's beautiful.

The dvd is the best part. It will take you to a house party at Krist's place, rare concert performances, and an amazing ending to and amazing box set with, "Seasons in the Sun," with Kurt on drums. That last performance will leave you with a tear in your eye as it sums up the last of Nirvana.

This is an amazing box set, and you're missing out if you don't get it.

Well, this was a good buy, I'm a huge Nirvana fan so I had to buy this. It has alot of songs I haven't heard and some I have. Its raw stuff here and I like that! Nothing really polished here. The DVD was really cool the best thing about the DVD was "Jesus dosent want me for a sunbeam". 3 CD's here with a bunch of good stuff! Some filler crap I don't like but still awesome none the less. The book was really cool its got a bunch of photos and stuff and some info on all the stuff in the CD/DVD. It's expensive but worth every dollar I got it for $40 bucks.
