Paolo Caliari or Cagliari (Verona, 1528 - Venice, 1588), also known as Paolo Veronese, was an Italian painter, a central figure of Venetian Mannerism. The son of a stonemason, he was born in Verona, the city from which he took his name and where he trained as a painter. In 1556 he settled permanently in Venice, where he developed his art, being one of the most outstanding figures of the Venetian school. From 1541 he was a disciple and assistant of Antonio Badile, whose daughter Elena married him. In 1555 or 1556 he received his first representative commission in Venice: the decoration of the Sacristy and the ceilings of the Church of San Sebastian. There he created a cycle of paintings with perspective "sotto in sù" (from bottom to top).In 1560 he traveled to Rome to study the frescoes of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, whose influence was felt in later works, such as the frescoes of the Villa Barbaro in Maser (early 1560s), designed by Andrea Palladio. This collaboration between Veronese and Palladio influenced the architecture depicted in his later paintings. In the early 1570s, the Cuccina family commissioned him to produce a series of large-format paintings on biblical themes: The Virgin and the Cuccina family, The Adoration of the Kings, The Marriage at Cana and The Way to Calvary, in which Veronese depicts a renewed style, deepening the color and increasing the chiaroscuro. In 1573 he received a commission to paint a large canvas with the theme of The Last Supper. The result of the painting (now in the Gallery of the Academy in Venice) brought him before the court of the Inquisition, as it was understood that Veronese painted the religious theme with excessive freedom that bordered on irreverence as he represented Saint Paul distributing food. Veronese argued that he had added characters, animals and other elements to the painting for creative purposes. The artist resolved the conflict by changing the name of the painting to Dinner at the House of Levi, a chapter of minor religious importance, for which the Inquisition accepted some liberties. In part because of this conflict with the Inquisition and in accordance with a more emotional religiosity, the painter evolved in his old age towards a more reflective, less decorative style of painting.
