Well after recovering from a Photosensitive seisure (after being utterly engrossed by this game) I had to share my rapture with everyone at Amazon...
This game is super-cali-fragilistic-expee-alidoscious - to use an archaic term. Simply the best, cream of the crop, strategy game I've played to this very day. I have an extensive library of sims and strategy games (10 years worth) and I will be putting many of them on eBay very soon, thanks to this game...
Rise of Nations (RON) combines the best of turn-based strategy and real-time tactics into a delightable package. There are a few quirks in gameplay that any experienced gamer will notice - but EVERY game has some quirks: games are made by people who all have quirks, don't forget. These quirks are easily forgotten by the mesmerizing gameplay and frenzied battles that ensue as you seek to dominate civilization. I highly recommend getting the expansion pack with the original game - it's well worth the package price here on Amazon.
As for hardware: make sure you've got a solid, well-oiled PC. Update all of your drivers, OS, and related software (directx, etc) before running this game. A good AGP video card is almost required for playing out more extensive battles and expansive empires; and decent sound is a nice treat but not necessary. 512mb of memory is, in my opinion, required to run this game properly. I can't stand stuttering or hesitation in real-time battles so it may just be me - but be prepared. Your computer should comfortably exceed the requirements listed on the box...
If you've enjoyed turn-based games (various world war games, Age of Wonders, Disciples, etc...) and also love real-time games (Age of Empires series) then this game scores a blistering bullseye on your meter: you won't be able to comprehend how much gameplay is contained in this title until you fire it up yourself... I don't think I have enough years left to my life to finish all of it... maybe...

I looked forward to loading and running this game. Reynolds' contributions to Civilization made it a must buy. And Microsoft sort of indicated that it would be produced well.
I never found out.
After three minutes of tutorial the game froze. Had to unplug the computer to restart it.
So I tried playing the game, instead of running the tutorial. Got just about as far and it froze again.
I tried this four times and four time I had to unplug my computer. (I'm running WinXP on a Pentium 4 from IBM.)
So I tried the newsgroups at Microsoft. Lo and behold there are at least a dozen comments on the news groups about system freezes and this game. So I write Customer Service at Microsoft. (Costs $30 to call them, so you email them.) So they run a diagnostic on my system. And they tell me to install a new driver for my video card. I'm a little hesitant to do this, given that IBM routinely sends me notice when new drivers are available. But I download and try it. Guess what setup tells me: "This is not an appropriate driver for your video card."
I'm running an ATI video card. Others I saw with problems were also well known, like nVidia. Microsoft's next suggestion was that I buy a new video card! Nah. I'm afraid I have to return the game.

Advise to microsoft game development crew; "Start over!!!"
Yes, the upgrades are cool, but repetitive.
This game held my attention for about 4 hours. Then I got sick of it, and was ready to sell it back.

Innovating the RTS genre

WOW. After playing a match last saturday, I got to admit it this game is the best in the RTS genre right now.
It won't make a revolution, but it takes many great aspects of this genre to create a new standard.
It has a great AI(I mean this AI is very hard to defeat in moderate) as well as graphics. I can't rate the music since there isn't but the sound of each unit is great. Each unit also has an excellent animation.
All of the civilization (there are 18)seem to be very balanced: each one has unique units as well benefits.
So if you are tired of the same RTS repeating itself try this one and you will see how it refreshes the genre.

I've read other people's reviews of the game and I've got to say that while the gameplay is indeed good, graphically the game looks like it should have come out a couple years ago. Yes, you can zoom in three levels but all of the units look like wind up toy soldiers when they move. The units in Age of Mythology and Empire Earth move much smoother. The flying units look terrible compared to the same units in Empire Earth. If it weren't for the Conquer the World mode of play I'd have to give this game 2 stars only. Do yourself a favor and buy the Empire Earth Gold Edition. It is cheaper and a better game for your average RTS player. Most people point out that Rise of Nations is better because each civ has unique units. Unique units for each civilization does not a better game make.

Hello I installed he game on my computer which is a windows 10 operating system i put the settings as Windows XP on the game. It kept saying to run as administrator i finally figured out how to do this. once i launch it from the CD it goes to the play screen once i press play it says launching game for a split second and turns off... how do I fix this problem. The game installed perfectly fine.
