Description

This beautiful sundew has a wide distribution - from China and Japan via Southeast Asia and Australia to New Zealand. Drosera spathulata includes several varieties and many forms. The Spoon-leaved sundew occurs in various habitats such as wet rocks, white quartz sand and peaty soil. It forms up to 5 cm wide rosettes of spathulate leaves that are densely covered with tentacles. Especially with intense lighting, it can show light-red tones. A number of pink flowers appear on up to 25 cm long flowering stalks.

Drosera spatulata is known as an easy to keep sundew species. It may even become a "weed" in carnivorous plant cultures. A moist, nutrient-poor and acid substrate such as peat-sand mixture, an air humidity of about 50 - 75 % and much light are recommendable. This Drosera can grow year-round with temperatures above 20 °C but a hibernation with about 10 - 15 °C is possible. This sundew develops many seeds after flowering that often germinate spontaneously. It can also be propagated by leaf cuttings

With its quite compact, often more or less red rosettes, the Spoon-leaved sundew is a conspicuous carnivorous plant for subtropical to tropical, well-lit terrariums, paludariums and similar containers, also on vertical, moist surfaces.
