Description

The button fern or New Zealand cliff brake is a very ornamental, low-growing subtropical fern known for its robustness. It is endemic to New Zealand, where it occurs in a variety of habitats and soil types - in woodland and scrub, in rock crevices, on roadsides, amongst grasses etc., from coastal to montane altitudes. Pellaea rotundifolia is widely known as an ornamental plant, and in mild winter regions it can also be grown outdoors. Dense bushes of narrow, overhanging fronds grow on creeping rhizomes, usually up to 25 cm, sometimes up to 46 cm long. The fern grows to over 40 cm wide, but is usually no taller than 20 cm. It is characterised by its more or less rounded, leathery fronds, to which the name button fern refers.

Pellaea rotundifolia does not have high requirements, but grows best in well-drained, loose, humus-rich, rather acidic soil. The soil should be kept moderately moist and may occasionally become a little dry, but should neither dry out completely nor become waterlogged. Once the plant is well established, it can be fed occasionally with a houseplant fertiliser. A bright location is recommended, but not in full sun for daylight cultivation. With its leathery leaves, the button fern tolerates dry air better than many other ferns, except in very warm conditions. In keeping with its origin in a subtropical climate with cool, but usually frost-free winters and warm, humid summers, temperatures should not be too high.

With its distinctive appearance, rather small size and ease of care, the button fern is not only a popular houseplant, but also a standard plant for terrariums. This fern from the subtropical humid and hardwood forests of New Zealand is ideal for cooler forest terrariums, but can also be used in various tropical terrarium types. Its overhanging fronds look particularly beautiful in an elevated position, for example on moist back walls.
