Pea Ascochyta blight is a fungal disease that can attack all types of pea plants. It is known in all pea-growing countries, in areas with humid climates, and during periods of rich rainfall.

Symptoms. Infected leaves, stems, and pods have small spots, 1-2 mm in size. They are at first discolored, then brown with less defined or precisely defined edges. The dry central areas of the spots eventually turn gray and show small black dots. The infection on the stems is very damaging. Near the 1 cm long spots, the tissues are uneven, the stems are strangled, and the upper part of the plant wilts. The infected beans have deep, circular, brown, or brown-gray spots, with small black dots. The earlier the bean infection is established, the greater the damage of the crop. Even if grains are formed, they have wrinkled tegument, with yellow or brown spots, and have a low germination rate.

Plants grown from infested grains perish shortly after they spring or remain feeble. Pea Ascochyta blight is favored by high humidity (over 90%) and temperatures between 25-30°C. It is strongly manifested in plants grown in soils excessively fertilized with nitrogen.

Prevention and control. It is recommended to cultivate resistant varieties, use healthy seeds, and balanced soil fertilization. During the growing season, three treatments can be applied. The first will be done at the beginning of the stem branching. The second one is before flowering. And the third one, after flowering, with specific fungicides.
