Ryan Poles: Trevis Gipson never requested a trade from Bears

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) Former Bears pass rusher Trevis Gipson didn't request a trade prior to being released, general manager Ryan Poles said Wednesday.

Gipson was officially waived by the Bears on Tuesday as the team set its initial 53-man roster. He wasn't claimed off waivers and is available to be signed as a free agent. During Chicago’s preseason finale Saturday at Soldier Field, ESPN reported Gipson received permission to explore a trade.

The 26-year-old Gipson had 10 sacks over 40 games with the Bears, including three last season.

“He had his most production in a (3-4) scheme versus a 4-3,” Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham said. “He did a lot for us, just in terms of the leadership and who he was, showed up every day. We just wanted the best situation for him, and ultimately that was the decision we came to.”

Gipson was a fifth-round pick of the Bears and their previous regime during the 2020 NFL Draft. The decision to waive Gipson came after Chicago bolstered its pass rush by signing veteran Yannick Ngakoue earlier in August.

The Bears open the regular season on Sept. 10, when they host the Packers at Soldier Field.

“I really believe this team is set up to elevate and go to the next level,” Poles said.
