Allophylus is a tropical and subtropical genus of shrubs and trees, with around 200 species recognized by some botanists.
Allophylus decipiens is a South African indigenous species from the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Western Cape Provinces. It is commonly known as Bastard Currant, Bastard Taaibos, Bastertaaibos, Baster-taaibos, False Currant, Rooibessieboom, Small-leaved False Currant and Valstaaibos. It is synonymously known as Allophylus spicatus and Schmidelia decipiens. It grows into a shrub or small tree of up to 4 meters tall. It has pale bark and 3 foliate toothed leaves. During autumn it bears small whitish flowers in furry catkin-like racemes. These are followed by round red fruits. This tree yields nice wood.
