Wild Iris (Moraea) Gallery

I first became fascinated by irises during a spring visit to the stunningly beautiful Mottisfont Walled Garden in Wiltshire.

Since then I have been in search of Moraeas. First described by Phillip Miller in 1758, Linnaeas is said to have changed the name to honour the family of his wife. Whether this is true or not, they are exquisite!

According to the newly published Renosterveld Guide there are 195 species in southern Africa. Fortunately for me 123 of them are found in the Cape Floristic Region. Despite their prevalence here, locating them in flower is one of life's ongoing challenges and sometimes it simply comes down to good luck! Thanks to good rains, 2020 has been quite a special year.
