Actor Taye Diggs just snagged a recurring role in the upcoming season of the hit drama Empire.

Diggs, raised in Rochester, confirmed the role on his Facebook page Monday. He will be playing a Harvard Law-educated politician named Angelo Dubois, a character who has drawn comparisons to President Barack Obama, reported Vibe magazine and other media outlets.

Diggs has been seen on FOX already in the past year as a guest star on the medical drama Rosewood.

The School of the Arts and Syracuse University graduate rose to fame in the Broadway smash hit Rent, and is best known for his Broadway prowess and his turn on ABC's Private Practice. He currently stars as Inspector Terry English on TNT's Murder in the First.

He will appear on Empire's Season 3 premiere on Sept. 21 on FOX.
