Origin: Ecuador, at elevations of 8000 to 10000 feet (2400 to 3000 m)

Growth Habits: Shrubby or treelike cactus, up to 14 feet tall (4.2 m); stem segments up to 10 inches long (25 cm), 2.4 inches in diameter (6 cm); awl-shaped leaves, up to 0.4 inch long (1 cm); glochids; 2 to 8 spines


Blooming Habits:
Red flowers up to 2.8 inches long (7 cm)
