Fun and colorful 3D platformer - GREAT for the kids!
This is a MUST HAVE game if you meet at least two of these three requirements: One - You own a Dreamcast Two - You have younger children Three - you love 3D platform/adventure games. THE GAMES BASIC STORY Daisy is kidnapped by Merlock, the evil magician, while reporting inside Merlocks secret temple. Donald must find the 4 pieces of the BOSS WARP PAD and rescue Huey, Dewey and Louie's toys so that he can get to the Bonus level and eventually save Daisy! He has help from Gyro Gearloose the inventor. GAMEPLAY This is a "by the book 3D" platformer complete with puzzles to solve, missions to complete and items to find and collect. There are four main levels, (Duckie Mountain, Duckberg, Magica De Spell's Haunted Mansion and Merlock's Ancient Temple), and each of those have separate stages ... NOTE: Gameplay is the same for both the DC and GC versions but they look quite different. There is no inventory management. This makes it very easy for young children who can not read yet to effectively play the game. It is not too difficult, although some jumps are hard for my 4 year old to get past. I am likely to give up on a game that is too difficult to play right from the get go. This game also lends to a comfortable "pick up and play" feeling that has great value after playing your intense FPS or MMP games online. There are basically 4 moves throughout the game: jump, double jump, punch and jump/kick. Mashing the "A" button will do the jump and double jump and this could get you through most of the game. The GameCube version adds additional special moves. Young children, or people of all ages, will enjoy the familiar Disney characters in this game. The movement and jumps and puzzles are just hard enough for gamers to have to pay a bit of attention to yet easy enough for young players to try a few times and SUCCEED! If you fail a jump then you can get back and try again. Donald passes a few checkpoints which auto save the game so if Donald passes out, (there is no death in this game), Donald can resume at the last checkpoint. Kids will love it. It's funny, colorful and has lots of simple action - not like some modern games that you watch as much as you play - this one has gameplay interaction! The colors are vivid and the stages are interesting. Finding and rescuing the toys and puzzle pieces is rewarding as Donald does a little "happy dance". NOT A SHALLOW CHILDREN'S GAME This is a full out 3D platformer, not a collection of mini-games like so many that get released for the Wii, but it is a shorter one lasting a guy like me about 20 hours. Your 6 year-old could finish this game faster than me but most 6 year-olds are better video gamers than I am. It's no simple stroll through the park either. While the game is geared towards children it does present it's challenges, mostly at the boss levels. BOTTOM LINE This is a very good Disney licensed game produced by Ubi Soft. It sticks to "the formula" and gets everything correct. There are no flaws and the games simple and violent-free backbone make this an excellent choice for kids or old farts who love single player 3D platform / adventure games.
