1964 VW Karmann Ghia, Driving Memories

Classics, European, Sports Cars  /   /  By Derek Mau

A friend of mine in high school had a 1964 VW Karmann Ghia. We thought we were something special riding around, cruising the streets at night, looking Rico Suave, and trying to impress the ladies. Ah, the memories that come to life from something as simple as a Karmann Ghia convertible. Designed by an Italian designer and engineered by the Germans, it features the same, almost indestructible rear-mounted air-cooled 4-cylinder engine as the VW Beetle and averages 25 mpg.

This 1964 VW Karmann Ghia is a Show Winner.

Today’s Pacific Blue VW Karmann Ghia underwent a detailed 3 year restoration process and is now show worthy. According to the listing, this car won Best of Show at a large national VW event. Starting with a rust- and accident-free foundation is a big factor behind the car’s successful restoration.

Professionally Rebuilt by a Volkswagen Expert.

A VW expert technician rebuilt the Karmann Ghia’s 1641cc engine. It may look stock in appearance, but has a lot more power and drive-ability. The restoration process included stripping and repainting most of the parts on the engine. The fan shroud, cylinder tins, and air cleaner all look great with fresh paint.

Re-plated and Upgraded.

The bumpers and chrome pieces were re-plated and the interior is new. A 12-volt electrical system replaces the original. A modern hidden stereo plays music from your smartphone or iPod. The cigarette lighter functions as a charging port.  The Pacific Blue exterior looks inviting, although the seller does not mention if the color is original. The car shows well in the sunlight after being color sanded and buffed to a mirror finish. The seller makes no note of any blemishes or areas needing attention. But even though it looks decent in the photos posted, as always, a little caution goes a long way. While the VW Karmann Ghia is relatively simple, buying a decades-old restored car requires due diligence. Getting an expert to do a pre-purchase inspection is always a good idea before writing a check.
