This is your basic FRS radio with reasonably reliable communication over about 1 - 2 miles in the woods, perhaps 1 mile in the city, perhaps over 5 miles mountaintop to mountaintop in the clear with direct line of sight and no obstructions. It is lightweight. Now they run on 4 AAA batteries but I actually prefer that because (1) cheap FRS rechargables are a major cause of unreliability and failure; and (2) cheap FRS chargers are another problem entirely. When I want reliable comms, I am willing to pop in four batteries before we go out. These radios are loud. When the volume is turned up too high they start crackling and breaking up but they can be turned up loud enough even for noisy situations. The microphones are sensitive and reproduce voice quite well. Of course they have all the stuff modern FRS radios have, such as CALL, squelch encoding, etc. We hang these radios on lanyards around our necks and never miss a call. We also religiously pop the batteries back out when we get home (good practice). Just a fine product that works well. It has been discontinued, so the price is unbelievably low.Read full review

This is a pro product. It is heavy in the hands although it is very small. A solid little radio receiver/transmitter. It is not going to cost you an arm and a leg. I think it is very affordable. The range is telling. 1km in urban areas, 5-10km in the wild and up to 20km in mountainous terrain. No toy offers that kind of range. The only catch is the frequency range. Although it uses Citizens Band (CB) range in the US, the range is not CB in other countries and could get you into trouble. And this model is not programmable where it could be moved to operate in a different frequency range. That range is set in stone. The best thing to do is find out about the allowed ranges in your country and ensure that these work in that range. I am not sure if you can block the ranges that are not allowed and only allow it to work in the allowed ranges. But I'll buy this again if allowed in my country. My request to Cobra, please make it programmable so that we can also benefit from it in other countries.Read full review
While the range listed is 20 miles, you'll be lucky to get half of that. If you're using a headset with mike (not included) it does have a nice voice activated feature that seems to work pretty well. It's good in the woods for several miles, and I would imagine that it would be excellent for communicating from one end of a large boat to the other during anchoring, docking, undocking, etc. as well as communicating with shore parties in areas not covered by cell service. Fits easily into a pocket, or clips to your belt or shirt collar. Handy and nice, especially for the price.

I bought this product to use it with my friends, instead of using the phone every time I want to talk to them, and search for there names and make the call/message, I use this product. I liked most about this product that it is very fast and it got a big range, also it is very simple, I mean it is very easy to use. What I disliked about the product is, for example if you buy 4 of this product, you can't make a call for one or two, only for the 4.
Great for in house communication!! upstairs to downstairs!!
