Banana ‘Beccari’ (Musa beccarii var. hottana).

A very rare dwarf banana variety from low elevation rainforest along the Kinabatangan River in Sabah on the island of Borneo. Compared to M. beccarii var beccarii it has more drooping leaves, fewer suckers and orange-red inflorescence bracts with yellow tips.

This banana is one of the best for indoors as it stays small and can take lower light levels than most other bananas.

This small and slender ornamental banana has erect inflorescences with bright red bracts that are yellow and green at the tips. It can be grown in a container or on the ground where it can reach a height of about 6’ to 10’ tall. The leaves are bright green, narrow and oblong. The fruits also appear upright and in groups of 2-5 hands, each hand having 1-3 fruits. The blooms last a long time and suitable as cut flowers.

The name was given in honour of Odoardo Beccari (1843-1920), the Italian naturalist famed for his resarch work in Borneo and best known for discovering Titan arum, the largest tropical flower on planet earth.
Musa beccarii can be found growing naturally along the Kinabatangan River on the eastern part of Sabah, a Malaysian state situated in the island of Borneo.
