Coral Aloe is one of the prettiest succulents in my garden. The smooth blue leaves are edged with pink which seems to light up at sunset. About 2' in diameter, this is a tidy, compact, handsome plant that looks good year round.

A. striata is native to South Africa, where it grows in ungodly heat and minimal rainfall. A drought-tolerant garden is luxurious by comparison. Plant this beauty in lean, sandy soil and full sun. Water it once a month or never. It will think it's gone to heaven.

In mid-winter, Aloes send up colorful blooms, vivid coral candelabras that last for weeks. Just when your garden looks tragic, Coral Aloe will put on a show that stops traffic.

Easy to germinate, they need heat, light, and a well draining soil, you can use a cactus mix. Fill a pot with your soil, and water, allow to drain. Place your seeds on the surface of the soil, and sprinkle a light layer of soil over seeds. Use a spray bottle to keep soil moist, but never soaking wet. A spray bottle is ideal also because a hard stream of water can dislodge seeds and bury them too deeply to germinate. Cover your pot with plastic wrap and place in a warm, sunny location. Once you have seedlings, remove plastic wrap.
