Gmelina philippensis or Parrot's Beak is a very unique plant known for producing long terminal chains of flowers that resemble the beak of a parrot. This tropical beauty has been used historically for a variety of medicinal treatments.
This Asian native plant can be trained into a several of growth habits. Interestingly, it is commonly formed into a Shohin Bonsai which means 'small thing'. Shohin Bonsais are often under 10 inches tall. In a typical landscape though, Parrot's Beak will extend long straggling limbs until they are clipped. To encourage a compact growth pattern, many growers cut these reaching limbs near the center of the shrub.
When Parrot's Beak flowers during the Summer months, it produces terminal pendulous chains of green bracts that open to reveal bright yellow flowers at their end. The true flowers of this plant are a brilliant yellow and shaped like the open beak of a parrot.
