What is a helichrysum?

A helichrysum is a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Asteraceae. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region. Helichrysum species are grown as ornamental plants and used in herbal medicine. The name "helichrysum" comes from the Greek word for sun, helios, and chrysos, meaning gold, referring to the colour of the flowers.

The helichrysum plant produces a wide variety of compounds that may be used as medicine. These compounds are believed to have an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial function. Helichrysum is also known for its wound healing function and is commonly used in skin care products.

Why is helichrysum so popular?

The helichrysum is a beautiful flower and has pointy petals with a circle of little petals in the middle. De flower is perfect to use as cut flower to put in a vase for in your home or as dried flowers.

Helichrysums are popular for their showy flowers and their ability to thrive in dry conditions. Species of the plant are used as ornamental plants, as well as for medicinal purposes. They are also drought-tolerant and can grow in poor-quality soils. They do require full sun and well-drained soil.

When to plant helichrysum?

You can buy the helichrysum the whole year round at FAM Flower Farm. The best time to plant the flower seeds is in mid-May or June. The helichrysum is not perennial, therefore plant the flower after the chance of frost is over. The helichrysum will flower in June until September.

How to plant flower seeds?

First loosen the soil and make sure no rocks are in the soil. Plant the seeds 0,5 to 2 centimetres (0,2 to 0,8 inches) in the ground. Make sure you sow the seeds sparingly, otherwise they will flower in clumps. After sowing, cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and water the helichrysum regularly.
