Sundance Interview: The Killing Room's Jonathan Liebesman

One of the more underrated films here at Sundance that has been on my mind ever since I watched it is The Killing Room. The film is directed by Jonathan Liebesman, only known so far as the guy who directed both Darkness Falls and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. With this film, though, he's showing us that he's a much better director than you might have thought. I talked with Liebesman earlier today at Sundance about his films, including the upcoming Battle: Los Angeles, not only because I really wanted to chat about The Killing Room, but to give him a chance to redeem himself, as you'll see.

As you see above, I'm trying a new format for interviews at Sundance this year using my Flip Mino. I apologize for the rather skewed angle, but it should still be watchable. Without most people having seen The Killing Room yet, it's hard to actually see why what Liebesman is saying should actually be taken seriously. I was very impressed with his directing on this film and now I'm much more excited to see what he will do with Battle: Los Angeles. What a great interview, and I love the new video format; not that I mind reading, but this gives me a chance to see the film makers passion and initial reactions to a question using their body language. It's funny how he brought up Cameron as one of his influences because the whole time I was listening to him describe the effect vs story dilemma and the way he planned on filming Battle Los Angeles I was thinking that he sounded like Cameron. Funny how he cited your favorite war movie as a reference to Battle LA. I never thought this guy had what it takes after TCMTB and Darkness Falls, but that just goes to show that you can't judge an artist entirely on their resume. Sounds like he had free reign on The Killing Room so I'll give him another shot and hold my judgment until after I see that.

I think video + transcription is ideal, to suit all preferences (except whoever has the shit task of transcribing) but... what's the deal with the no-fullscreen? And the watermark is understandable, but annoying when it covers the subject's face. And fascinating interview. I'm officially excited for Battle: Los Angeles.

Jonathan Liebesman is by far my favorite Director I watched every movie so far he has made But my favorite is The Killing Room My favorite movie i memoriaze every line every scene in that movie but i can never find an interview of him about it This Video Does NOT play why is that i want to watch it so bad. HE PISSED ME OFF WHEN HE SAID THERE WILL NOT BE ANOTHER KILLING ROOM Why wuld he make the Ending say "Congratulations....Welcome to phase 2" He said i just did the movie cause I do any movie i can get my hands on what an ass but hes still my fav director
